Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
The Pensacola Ice Flyers visited their I-10 rival this evening in Biloxi, taking on the Mississippi Surge and coming out on top 4-2. Andrew Harrison and Tyler Soehner of the Ice Flyers would both have 3 points on the night. After a seesaw weekend, this victory is a welcomed one among the Ice Flyers and their fans.
The Surge opened the scoring 7:46 into the first with an unassisted goal from Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn. The Ice Flyers bounced right back a couple seconds under a minute later with Ryan Salvis and Tyler Soehner setting up Andrew Harrison, who scored his 13th goal of the season.
The first frame ended tied at 1, and just a few minutes into the second, Tyler Ruel of the Surge put his team up 2-1. Near the half way mark, the Ice Flyers' 3rd rank powerplay went to work. Jordan Chong buried a powerplay marker with Mike Carter and Matthew Robertson recording assists. 12:41 into the period, Harrison was back on the scoreboard with his second of the night and on the powerplay. Jason Dolgy and Soehner grabbed the helpers on Harrison 14th tally of the season.
The Ice Flyers took a 3-2 lead into the third and fought hard to keep lead. Then at 12:56 of the third, captain Dan Buccella would add an insurance marker for Pensacola. Harrison collected one assist on the play, getting his 3rd point of the night, and Soehner recorded his 3rd assist of the game on Buccella's goal.
Jeff Rose was in net for Pensacola and received the 4-2 win, improving his record as an Ice Flyer to 2-2. Kiefer Smiley had the loss in goal for the Surge and moves his record to 8-5-2.
The shots on goal were fairly even as Mississippi edged Pensacola in that stat, 25-22. Harrison was named the 1st star, Buccella the 2nd, and Versteeg-Lytwyn received the 3rd star nod.
These two teams face off for a rematch Friday night in Pensacola at 7:05PM. It is Girl Scout Night that evening, where girl scouts can receive a special-priced ticket. They are asked to call Willa at the Ice Flyers' office at 850-466-3111. Fans are also encouraged to bring a teddy bear for the teddy bear toss after the Ice Flyers' first goal.
