DUBUQUE, Iowa - Fighting Saints forward Max Gardiner announced today that he will continue his hockey career at Penn State University next season. Gardiner, who has scored six goals and added five assists for the Fighting Saints this year, becomes the ninth USHL player to have committed to Penn State.

A native of Deephaven, Minnesota, Gardiner will have a unique opportunity to help build the program at Penn State. The Nittany Lions will compete as an independent program next season, before joining the Big Ten Hockey Conference in 2013-14.

Gardiner has increased his productivity lately for Dubuque, scoring six points over his last five games with the Fighting Saints. He was picked by the St. Louis Blues in the third round of the 2010 NHL Draft.

Fighting Saints Head Coach Jim Montgomery was pleased to hear of Gardiner's commitment, and wished him the best in his future endeavors.

"I'm really happy for Max," he said. "He's a great young man from a great family, and he will have an opportunity to be a part of something really special at Penn State as they build their program."

With Gardiner's commitment, the Fighting Saints now have twelve players committed to play NCAA Division 1 hockey.

The Fighting Saints hit the ice tonight, hosting Team USA for the first of three games over the course of three consecutive days. Pregame coverage starts on Dubuque's Super Hits 106 at 6:40 p.m.
