Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
The Pensacola Ice Flyers and the Louisiana IceGators met for the first time this season in Lafayette. The game turned out to be a seesaw match, with the Ice Flyers taking the 2 points in a shootout win, 5-4.
The first period went back and forth until the final minute of the period. Ice Flyer Jordan Chong chased down the puck and fed Dan Buccella as he was driving to the IceGators' net and buried his shot. This would be the only goal scored in the first, with Louisiana edging Pensacola in shots with an 8-6 advantage.
The IceGators came out of the gate in the second frame with 3 quick goals. The first one coming from Alex Morton just over three minutes in to tie the game at 1. A few minutes later, the IceGators would go up 2-1 with a tally from Sean Murray on the powerplay. Only 37 seconds later, Jason Hill sent Robert Short in on a breakaway and beat Ice Flyers' keeper, Steve Christie.
After Ice Flyers called a time out, they seemed to settle down take more control of the game. Just over 7 minutes left in the second, Ice Flyers' Britt Ouellette banked one of Gator goalie, Kevin Beech, and brought Pensacola within one. Chris Wilson, in his first game off the IR, then buried one on the powerplay with just under two minutes remaining in the second period. This would tie the game at 3 apiece. IceGators outshot the Ice Flyers in the second 10-9.
Ice Flyers' assistant captain, Mike Carter, also returned to the lineup after missing last weekend's games. 7:14 into the final period, Carter scored with Kevin Brojek and Chong recording helpers on the play. Desperate to draw even, Louisiana pulled Beech for an extra attacker. The gamble paid off as August Aiken of the IceGators put the puck passed Christie and forced overtime. Shots in the third were in favor of Pensacola, 10-6.
Both teams had tremendous scoring chances in OT, but Christie and Beech both stood tall in their nets, sending the game to a shootout. The Ice Flyers would score first as Britt Ouellette beat Beech on a deek. Jason Hill was up next for the IceGators and he scored to tie the shootout at 1. Matt Robertson was up next for the Ice Flyers and he capitalized to put Pensacola up 2-1 in the shootout. This would be the eventual game-winner as Christie and Beech shut the door the rest of the way on the remaining shooters.
The Ice Flyers would end up edging the IceGators in shots, 26-25. Ice Flyer Mike Carter was named the game's 1st star, while Louisiana's Jason Hill and August Aiken were named 2nd and 3rd stars, respectively. Christie improves his record as an Ice Flyer with the win to 3-1, stopping 21 of 25 shots. Beech's record moves to 1-1-1 with the OT loss as he stopped 21 of 26 shots on goal.
Mike Carter and Matthew Robertson both had a goal and an assist in the game for the Ice Flyers, as teammate Jordan Chong recorded 3 helpers on the night to lead the way for Pensacola. Louisiana was led by Josh Boyd (3 assists) and Jason Hill (2 assists).
The Ice Flyers return home Friday night to face off against the Columbus Cottonmouths at 7:05 PM. Visit Pensacola will also be filming the game, so fans are encouraged to bring their Ice Flyer gear and be a part of the commercial.
