SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Dec. 11, 2011) - David Savard scored twice in the second period and Springfield score three times on the power play as the Falcons defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5-1 at the MassMutual Center on Sunday afternoon. The win pushes Springfield's record to 12-12-1-0. The Sound Tigers lose their third straight game and fall 11-11-3-1
Springfield took an early 2-0 lead courtesy of two quick goals. Matt Calvert fired a shot from the top of the left circle that deflected off Sound Tiger defenseman Ty Wishart's stick and past Anders Nilsson to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead 8:09 into the game. Alex Giroux pushed Springfield's lead to two just 1:19 later when he converted on an odd-man rush for his eighth goal of the season.
The Sound Tigers cut the deficit in half 1:19 after Giroux's tally courtesy of an unlikely source. Benn Olson, who usually plays defense for the Sound Tigers, was dressed as a forward today and took advantage of the opportunity. Olson found a rebound from Blair Riley's shot that caromed off the end boards and fired past Manny Legace for his first career AHL goal to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Falcons heading into the second period.
However, Springfield regained their two-goal cushion 1:14 into the middle frame when Savard fired through traffic to beat Anders Nilsson and make the score 3-1. Savard netted his second goal of the game and season with 1.5 seconds left in the middle frame on the power play when he fired through a Dane Byers screen and past Nilsson to give Springfield a 4-1 lead after two periods.
Goaltender Joe Fallon made his Sound Tigers debut in relief of Anders Nilsson to begin the third period after Nilsson allowed four goals on 23 shots. Fallon stopped six of the seven shots he faced, but could not stop Cam Atkinson's one-time blast from the left circle 5:03 into the third period, marking Springfield's third power play tally of the game. The Sound Tigers were 0-for-5 on the power play in the game.
The Sound Tigers return to action next Friday when they open a weekend road trip at the XL Center against the Connecticut Whale at 7:00 p.m.
