Worcester Sharks News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Tony Lucia scored in the third period for the Sharks but Worcester's two game win streak came to an end in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Manchester Monarchs at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Tyson Sexsmith was solid in net for Worcester making 28 saves in the loss in a game that featured four fights and 60 penalty minutes. The Sharks grabbed five out of a possible six points in the 3-in-3 weekend.
Worcester outshot Manchester 20-10 in the opening period that saw plenty of extracurricular activities. Jimmy Bonneau (4th FM) fought Justin Johnson (8th FM) at 2:49 in a good scrap in front of the Monarchs bench. Tommy Wingels (1st FM) and Richard Clune (10th FM) dropped the mitts off a faceoff at 17:17 for a quick scrap followed by Jimmy Bonneau trying to get Jordan Nolan to scrap at 18:28.
The Sharks allowed the first goal for a sixth straight game as Dwight King (2nd) sent a seeing eye shot past Tyson Sexsmith after a rush down the left wing at 2:55. Fireworks continued in the middle frame as Matt Pelech (2nd FM) and Jordan Nolan 6th FM) fought behind the Worcester net at 15:44. After the scrap, Nolan shoved goaltender Tyson Sexsmith as the bad blood continued between the two clubs. Nathan Moon (3rd FM) and Justin Acevedo (1st FM) had a spirited bout at 18:18 to close out the period. Worcester trailed 1-0 after forty minutes despite outshooting Manchester 29-18.
In the third period, Tony Lucia (1st) found a perfect time to score his first marker of the season after he roofed the puck from on top of the blue paint past Jeff Zatkoff at 8:46 to tie the score at 1-1. James Livingston grabbed the only assist after he set up Lucia front behind the Manchester net. Neither team would find the back of the net for the rest of the third or in a wide open overtime period that saw several great chances on both sides.
In the shootout, Brodie Reid and Tony Lucia scored for the Sharks through seven rounds, but Manchester got strikes by Justin Acevedo, Marc-Andre Cliché, and Robert Czarnick to take the 2-1 victory over Worcester.
The Sharks record falls to 8-6-3-3 with 22 points through 20 games and to 2-1-3-2 on the road.
