Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Southaven, Miss - The Mississippi RiverKings fell to the Louisiana IceGators 4-1 in front of 2,881 spectators at the Desoto Civic Center. The loss drops the 'Kings to 4-6-1 on the season.
The RiverKings found themselves in a hole early after penalties derailed the team's chance to strike first. Shawn McNeil found the back of the net on the power play just six minutes into the first period to put the IceGators on top by one. Just over two and a half minutes later, Jason Hill deflected a shot in past David Wilson on the power play as the IceGators led by two.
Tobias Carlsson's delay of game penalty put the RiverKings on the power play with a chance to mount a comeback. Instead, a miscue at the point resulted in a McNeil breakaway. Lundale got his stick caught around McNeil's midsection, as McNeil fell and drew a penalty shot, which he converted to put the 'Gators up by three. Brayden Metz added two more power play goals early in the second period to finish the scoring for the IceGators.
The RiverKings tallied both goals in the third period as Mike Tuomi capitalized on a Kevin Beech rebound as he buried one in to cut the lead to 5-1. Then, with just over two minutes left in the game, Brendan Baumgartner scored his first of the year on a breakaway on a pass from Leland Fidler to put the score at 5-2.
The penalty-filled game concluded with 19 total offenses totaling 75 minutes. Rob Sich and Kyle Lundale each got game misconducts for abusing an official. Each team had three fighting majors a piece and Darrell Stoddard earned a five minute major for elbowing.
The loss drops David Wilson's record to 5-2 as he turned away 27 of 32 shots against. Kevin Beech gets the win in his return to the Mid-South, turning aside 28 of 30 shots on him.
After receiving a game misconduct last game for boarding, IceGators' defenseman Josh Duplantis was a late scratch from tonight's game. He is serving a suspension for the hit.
The RiverKings' non-profits raised a considerable amount of money for their causes. CAKEtabulous raised $3,000 while BOLD Initiative raised $2,000 through their ticket fundraisers for various Autism causes. The jersey auction yielded $5,250 with a portion of that going toward Assists for Autism.
The RiverKings square off against the Mississippi Surge at 3:05 tomorrow afternoon at the Desoto Civic Center as they conclude their three-game weekend.
Great tickets still remain for this season. Next weekend the RiverKings host "Guns and Hoses" Night to honor our local firefighters and police officers on Friday and Saturday is the 'Kings annual Teddy Bear Toss Night. Bring a stuffed bear to the game and throw it onto the ice after the RiverKings' first goal. All toys will benefit Toys for Tots.
