Mississippi Surge News Release
For the Mississippi Surge it was a happy case of deja vu all over again in its 4-3 win over the Columbus Cottonmouths Saturday night in Columbus.
Goaltender Kiefer Smiley posted the win which halts a three game losing streak for the Surge. On October 22nd, Smiley was also in goal in a 4-3 shootout win for the Surge, which ended a two game losing skid. He is now 4-0 on the season.
The Surge erupted for three second period goals, after Jesse Cole had given Columbus the lead in the first period. Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn tied the game at the 2:52 mark of the second period, and Colin Reddin put the Surge on top less than three minutes later. The final two minutes of the period proved eventful as Brett Hammond tied the game with a power play goal, at 18:12. When it looked like the teams would head to the third period tied, Surge defenseman James Isaacs scored an unassisted power play goal, with only 41 seconds left in the period.
Columbus battled back though as John Sullivan scored an unassisted goal of his own at 4:52 of the third perod. The back and forth game tilted back in favor of the Surge when Rob Campbell put Mississippi on top for good, with 2:23 remaining. The Surge had to dodge a late Columbus power play, as Adam Krug went off for cross-checking with 1:23 left. The Sure held off the furious rally to even its record at 7-7-0.
The Surge visits the Mississippi RiverKings Sunday at 3:05 p.m.
