Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - Kevin Irwin scored twice in the first period, and the Des Moines Buccaneers never looked back, beating the Fighting Saints 4-0 to end Dubuque's three game winning streak.
The Fighting Saints were rudely welcomed to Des Moines in the first period. Kevin Irwin tapped home a powerplay goal off of a rebound to give the Buccaneers a lead about seven minutes into the first period. Irwin scored again seven minutes later with a quick snipe from the right circle to make the score 2-0. Late in the period, Mac Olson capitalized on a Dubuque turnover. Anthony Greco intercepted a pass at the blue line and fed Olson, who beat Gabe Antoni to give the Bucs a 3-0 lead as the game headed to the first intermission.
The Buccaneers kept the offense going early on in the second period, with Matt Hansen shooting a puck past Antoni on the rush to give Des Moines a 4-0 advantage. Neither team was able to score in the remainder of the period, and the Fighting Saints trailed 4-0 as the final frame got underway.
Neither team scored in the final period. Antoni exited the game with a lower body injury, and emergency back up goaltender Collin LeMay made his USHL debut to open the third frame. LeMay made nine saves over the final twenty minutes, and Antoni's injury is not termed serious by the team.
Saturday's game closed out a stretch of three games in four days for the Fighting Saints. The Fighting Saints will play the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders twice next week, traveling to Cedar Rapids Arena on Friday night, and hosting the RoughRiders at the Mystique Community Ice Center on Saturday.
