Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
QUEBEC CITY - The injury-plagued Saint John Sea Dogs lost to the Quebec Remparts 4-1 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Tuesday.
Zack Phillips scored the lone goal for the Sea Dogs, while Mathieu Corbeil made 29 saves in the loss as. The Dogs - missing forwards Jonathan Huberdeau, Tomas Jurco, Stanislav Galiev and Aidan Kelly, fell to 21-7-0-1 and have lost two straight for the first time since September 2010.
Mikhail Grigorenko had a hat trick and Patrick Walsh added a single marker for the Remparts, who improved to 20-4-2-1. Louis Domingue had 25 saves in the win.
With the win, the Sea Dogs and the Remparts now sit tied for first in the QMJHL with 43 points.
Affiliate players Mackenzie Brown, Brock Morrison and Stephen Anderson rounded out the lineup for the Dogs. Setting the tone early in the first, Brown leveled rookie scoring leader and top 2012 NHL Entry Draft prospect Grigorenko in what would be a grinder of a first period. Few whistles made for a quick first period with a flurry of serious activity in the final minute. On a beautiful intercept in the defensive zone, Oliver Cooper took a pass up the middle for a two-on-one with Danick Gauthier, who just missed the opening goal in the final 10 seconds of the period.
The penalty-filled second period picked up exactly where both teams left off. It was back-and-forth until Grigorenko made the Sea Dogs pay with his 20th goal of the season coming in off the right wing boards and firing it past Corbeil 4:29 into the second frame. He followed that up with his 21st just under five minutes later at 9:28. The physicality continued with Grant West also laying out Grigorenko around the 12-minute mark. The chances continued with the back and forth play continuing to the end of the second.
Just over five minutes into the third, Alexandre Comtois came in on a breakaway but was turned away by Corbeil. It was the beginning of a furious attack by the Remparts who scored two goals in a span of 12 seconds. Grigorenko completed the natural hat-trick on a quick shot at 9:57. Walsh potted his marker at 10:09.
Phillips scored his 15th of the season and broke the shutout quest for Domingue at 15:20 off a blocked shot by Stephen MacAulay. Phillips picked up the puck and rifled one from the top left face-off circle into the corner over the shoulder of Domingue. The Dogs pulled Corbeil with just over three minutes remaining in an attempt to get another, but the 4-1 score stood.
The hits kept coming with Cooper being drilled at the Remparts bench with less than three minutes to go. The chippy play continued right up to the last second with Charles-Olivier Roussel dropping the gloves with Jeremie Malouin. Roussel tackled Malouin after landing a couple solid right hands in the short bout.
