Team USA Takes Home Bronze Medal...

The U.S. Select Team, which includes 20 USHL players, won the bronze medal at the 2011 World Junior A Challenge by defeating Sweden on Saturday night by the scored of 4-0.

Fargo Force goaltender Zane Gothberg stopped all 23 shots he faced to earn the shutout as the U.S. avenged their loss to Sweden from the opening game of the tournament.

Former USHL forward Mario Lucia opened the scoring in the first period after Youngstown Phantoms forward Austin Cangelosi set him up with a pass from between his legs.

Cangelosi then made it 2-0 in the second period with his first goal of the tournament. Seven minutes later, Tony Cameranesi of the Waterloo Black Hawks extended the lead to three goals.

In the third period, Sean Kuraly netted his fourth goal of the tournament to cap the victory for the U.S.

The U.S. Select Team, which is annually made up of almost entirely USHL players and coaches, has won a medal in all five appearances at the World Junior A Challenge since first appearing in 2007.

The Gamblers Take Over First Place in The Eastern Conference...

With pair of wins this past weekend, the Green Bay Gamblers currently hold the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a 10-3-0 record and 20 points. The Dubuque Fighting Saints are right behind the Gamblers with 19 points.

Kyle Novak and Nolan LaPorte lead the team in scoring, and both players had a two goal night on Saturday against the Chicago Steel. Novak on the season has scored 6 goals and 7 assists, and Laporte leads the team in goals scored with 8 goals and 5 assists.

Defensively in the absence of Welinski, Lauridsen has stepped up with 1 goal and 1 assist and a plus 8 rating. The goal for Lauridsen was the game winning goal last Friday night against the Indiana Ice. Max Hartner also saw action on the blueline for the first time this season.

The Gamblers as a team are 4-1 in thier last five games with wins in Waterloo, Indiana, Sioux City, and at home against Chicago.

Scoring from the Blueline...

Currently the Gamblers hold the league lead in scoring with 49 goals scored already this season. Although this years squad is very strong up front, the team has received helped from their blueline skaters.

Andy Welinski leads all defensemen is goals scored (5). The Anaheim Ducks drafted selectee has been a staple on the powerplay in his second year and is touted as one of the best defensemen in the league.

Joing Welinski are newly acquired Jordan Schmaltz and rookie Dakota Mermis both with 3 goals scored. Schmaltz is a North Dakota recruit and most believe is a top 10 draft selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Mermis comes in highly touted and will play for the Denver Pioneers in the future. The gamblers as a team are ranked 2nd in the USHL in goals allowed (2.38).

Off to The Windy City...

The next Green Bay Gamblers Bus Trip is set for Friday, December 2 to Bensenville, Illinois. Cost is $40.00 for Fan Club Members and $55.00 for non-members. Price includes bus, soda/water and a ticket to the game. All ages are welcome.

Bus will leave the Resch Center blue lot at 1:30 PM, returning to Green Bay following the game.

USHL Report... Rising Stars...

It was a full week but a good one for the Lincoln Stars as they won all four of their games and now own the League's longest winning streak at five games. The streak has launched the Stars into first place in the Western Conference standings. USHL points leader Kevin Roy has continued his torrid scoring pace putting up eight points (6g, 2a) over the four-game week which included a hat trick in the 6-5 win vs. Tri-City on Sunday. Forward TeemuTiitinen has scored all five of his goals over the team's five-game win streak, including a two-goal night in Friday's 3-2 victory over Sioux Falls in which he scored the game-winner. Luke Johnson had his point streak end at seven games when he was held scoreless for the first time this season on Saturday, but rebounded with a season high three points (1g, 2a) in Sunday's win. Lumberjacks Log a Pair...

Having won just once in five previous road games, the Muskegon Lumberjacks won a pair of games as the visitors during the weekend and have now won five of their last six games overall. A big part of the success was a strong penalty unit that turned aside all nine opponent power plays. Joseph Cox was the hero in both victories as he scored his first USHL goal, which was the game-winner, late in the third period in Friday's 2-1 victory at Youngstown and then had another late goal which was the deciding goal in Saturday's 5-4 win at Indiana. Goaltender John Keeney earned his first victory in a Muskegon uniform, and his 25th career USHL win, with 25 saves on Friday. Bucs End Road Drought...

The Des Moines Buccaneers picked up a pair of road wins over the weekend, their first wins away from home this season, and have now won four of their last five games. Twice during the weekend, they scored three goals in a period. On Friday when trailing 3-2 heading into the third period, they scored at even strength, shorthanded, and on the power play to earn a 5-3 win against Omaha. In Saturday's contest vs. Fargo, they scored three goals in the second period on their way to a 4-1 win. Tanner Karty scored two goals in the victory, his first two goals in the USHL. Forward Chad McDonald scored a goal in both wins and now has goals in three straight games. Helpers...

Two forwards were in the spirit of giving on Sunday as both racked up four assists, a League high in a game this season. Omaha Lancers forward Jimmy Murray dished out four assists in the 6-4 win over Sioux City, including an assist on all three goals for Casey Bailey's hat trick. Murray now leads the USHL with 12 assists this season. Tri-City Storm forward Soren Jonzzon set up four different teammates for goals in the 6-5 loss toLincoln. He also posted a game high plus-four rating. Seven-Round Shootout...

Cedar Rapids RoughRiders goaltender Jake Hildebrand stopped all seven attempts he faced in the shootout in the 4-3 win vs. Fargo on Friday. It was a League season high for shootout saves. He was one of the top goaltenders in the shootout last season and has turned away 17-of-18 (.944 SV%) shooters during his USHL career. Fargo Force goaltender Reed Peters stopped 6-of-7 in the shootout, his first appearance in a USHL extra session. Cedar Rapids forward Anders Schultz was the only player to convert in the shootout. This coming after he scored his first USHL goal earlier in the game. Notes...

Since being acquired in a trade, forward David Goodwin has tallied five points (3g, 2a) in four games with the Sioux City Musketeers, including a two-goal game in the 4-1 win against Cedar Rapids on Saturday...Tri-City Storm forward Nick Lappin scored two goals in Friday's 6-3 loss to Sioux City. It was his third multi-goal game of the season and he is the second USHL player this season to have scored 10 goals...San Anas scored two goals for the Youngstown Phantoms in the 4-3 loss to Dubuque on Sunday after scoring the previous night in the 5-2 win over Dubuque...Sioux City forwards Jordan Boucher-Gould (2g, 2a) and Pontus Johansson (1g, 3a) each had four-point games in the 6-3 win against Tri-City on Friday...Sioux Falls Stampede goaltender Charlie Lindgren made 37 saves in the 5-3 win against Tri-City on Saturday, one week after making 38 saves in a 3-2 victory over the same team for his first USHL win...Indiana Ice forward Robbie Baillargeon scored two goals in the 5-4 loss to Muskegon on Saturday and has now scored five goals over his last four games. College Report...

Scott Czarnowczan scored for Ferris State in a 5-1 victory over Lake Superior. Czarnowczan played for Green Bay during the 2008-09 season under head coach Jon Cooper.

Anders Lee scored on Friday for Notre Dame in a 5-4 victory over Alaska. Lee scored again on Saturday night on the powerplay. The Edina, Minnesota native currently has 12 goals on the season and leads all D-1 scorers.

Chris Crane scored for Ohio State in a 4-1 win over Northern Michigan. Currently Crane has 6 goals and 6 assists in 12 games for Ohio State.

Mike Merrifield scored the GWG is a 3-2 win for Michigan State on Friday night. The Spartan would add two more goals on the weekend on Saturday night. Merrifield joined the Gamblers during the 08-09 season under head coach Jon Cooper.

Austin Czarnik scored for Miami on Saturday night in a 3-3 game against Michigan. Miami would eventually win in a shootout.

Dalton Speelman scored for New Hampshire in a 4-4 tie on Saturday night with Vermont. Speelman on the season has 3 goals and 3 assists.
