Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Toys for Tots, K98.5 FM, and the Waterloo Black Hawks are offering fans two ways to help the children of less fortunate families in the Cedar Valley this Thanksgiving.

The Waterloo Black Hawks' annual teddy bear toss will commence immediately following the first goal during the traditional Thanksgiving game against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on November 24th. Fans are asked to bring new stuffed toys with tags to the game, and when the Black Hawks score their first goal, throw the them onto the ice. Players and staff will collect the bears and deliver them to Toys for Tots and other local charities.

New this season, the Hawks are also hosting a toy drive leading up to the Thanksgiving game. New toys still in their original packaging can be dropped off at the Black Hawks front office. Fans who bring a qualifying item for the toy drive by Tuesday, November 22, at 5pm will be entered for a chance to win two prime seats for the Thanksgiving game and other prizes, courtesy of K98.5.

"Fans have shown amazing generosity with the teddy bear toss in past seasons," said team President Doug Miller. "I think it is the best part of our Thanksgiving game, and we are excited to have K98.5's support this season. They brought us the idea to expand the effort to include the toy drive, and my only disappointment is that the Black Hawks didn't think of it years ago."

Miller emphasised the importance of contributing new, unused toys for the teddy bear toss and toy drive, since they will become Christmas gifts for kids. Ideally the plush toys would still have the tags attached.

Last season, the teddy bear toss began 2:24 into the second period after a goal by Jamie Hill. The Hawks won the game 3-2 in overtime.

Toy drive contributions will also be accepted during this weekends games Friday against the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Saturday versus the Indiana Ice. Both games start at 7:05. Tickets for the Thanksgiving matchup are also on sale now and going quickly.
