
Marlies Open 2011-12 Season with 3-2 Victory Over the Defending Calder Cup Champs

The Marlies began their 2011-12 season last Saturday with a 3-2 come from behind victory over the Binghamton Senators. The Marlies travel to Grand Rapids on Friday night and then will host back-to-back games on the weekend at Ricoh Coliseum.
What You Need To Know About The Toronto Marlies...
- The Marlies named Ryan Hamilton their club's fourth team captain in franchise history on Saturday. Hamilton has skated in 128 career games with the Marlies, posting 66 points (39 goals, 27 assists).
- Toronto named Mike Zigomanis and Jeff Finger as their two assistant captains.
- Toronto announced their opening day roster on Saturday, which included three goaltenders, eight defencemen and 15 forwards.
- Joe Colborne, who led the Marlies in scoring last season, recorded the Marlies first power play goal of the season on Saturday.
- The Marlies dropped both preseason games last week to the Syracuse Crunch and only registered one goal between the two games. After playing in Syracuse on Tuesday night, the team traveled to Lake Placid, NY for three days of team bonding.
- The Marlies fired 38 shots on goal against Binghamton on Saturday night. Through the first two periods, the Marlies had 35 shots on goal. In the second period, Toronto held the Sens to just one shot on goal.
- The Marlies won only four games last season when trailing after the first period, but were able to come back against the Senators on Saturday night after going down 2-0 in the first 20 minutes.
- The Marlies will play the Monsters five times over their next eight contests. In total, Toronto faces Lake Erie 10 times this season.
- Five of Toronto's next six games will be at Ricoh Coliseum. The Marlies begin a nine-game road trip on October 28 in Lake Erie.
- The first 5,000 fans in attendance on Saturday will receive a free magnetic schedule.
Last Week:
The Marlies opened their 2011-12 regular season in Binghamton on Saturday night with a 3-2 victory over the defending champions. After falling behind 2-0 after the first 20 minutes, the Marlies replied with three unanswered goals from Joey Crabb, Joe Colborne and Darryl Boyce. Toronto held the Senators to only one shot on goal during the second period.
The Marlies power play struck for two goals in the game, going 2-for-7 behind the goals of Colborne and Boyce; while their penalty killing unit, which ranked first in the AHL last season was a perfect 4-for-4.
Ben Scrivens earned the victory, making 23 saves on 25 shots, including all 15 fired at him in the final period of the game to protect the win.
Kenny Ryan and Kelsey Wilson both made their Marlie debuts in the game. For Ryan, it was his first career AHL contest.
UPCOMING OPPONENTS
The Marlies travel to Grand Rapids on Friday night to take on the Griffins at Van Andel Arena. The Marlies went 3-2-0-1 against the Griffins last season. The Griffins opened their season on Saturday in Rockford with a 3-2 loss to the IceHogs. Both of Grand Rapids goals came while on the power play. Joey MacDonald made 26 saves in the one-goal loss. The game on Friday night will be Grand Rapids' home opener.
Toronto plays their first home game of the season on Saturday when they host the Lake Erie Monsters at 3pm. Last season the Marlies struggled against their division rivals, going 1-6-0-1 in eight meetings. Lake Erie is winless so far this season through their first two games. They dropped a pair of games this past weekend against the Abbotsford Heat. In the two games, the Monsters only registered one goal.
Reading Report:
The Reading Royals went a perfect 2-0-0 in their two preseason games last week. Chad Painchaud and Denny Urban share the team lead with two points each. Both players attended the Marlies training camp two weeks ago.
