Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Make it six wins in a row and counting - and in dramatic fashion to boot - for the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors.

Sergey Kuptsov scored his second goal of the game with just eight seconds left in regulation time to lift the Majors to a thrilling 4-3 win over the Barrie Colts on Thursday night at the Barrie Molson Centre, lifting the Majors record to a perfect 6-0 to start the season.

The Majors trailed 3-1 in the third period but as they have all season, didn't quit before battling back to steal the two points in dramatic fashion.

Kuptsov scored at 4:56 of the third period and Derek Schoenmakers tallied on a power play at 13:08 to tie the game before Kuptsov's dramatic goal in the dying seconds gave Mississauga yet another win. Riley Brace continued to do his part in the winning cause, chipping in with three assists.

"You have to give the guys credit, it was sure done in dramatic fashion," Mississauga General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "We executed at just the right times and at important times in the game and that was huge.

"Our power play was really good tonight and more importantly, so was our penalty kill. We made a huge play to tie the game and we got the game-winning goal just in time.

"We did a lot of things right at the right times. It's been a great start to the season."

JP Anderson made 34 saves in goal for the Majors, who improved to 4-0 on the road. Mathias Niederberger made 30 saves in goal for the Colts before a disappointed crowd of 2,744 fans.

Barrie slipped to 3-2-0-1 with the loss, giving the Majors an early five point lead in the Central Division standings.

The Majors got off to a tough start when Erik Bradford opened the scoring just 5:44 into the game. Brett Foy then tied the game for the Majors with his first OHL goal on the power play at 19:02, leaving the score tied 1-1 after 20 minutes.

Zach Hall then restored Barrie's lead with the lone goal of the second period, and he scored again early in the third to put the Colts up 3-1 with 15:51 to go, as Barrie looked to be headed for the win.

But the Majors took over from there with their three late goals, out-shooting the Colts 15-12 in the third period. Barrie out-shot the Majors 37-34 overall. Mississauga was 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Colts failed to score in their five extra man chances.

The Majors hope to run their season opening winning streak to seven games Friday night when they face the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds at 7:35 p.m. at the Hershey Centre.
