Second Annual 'Give Blood, Watch Hockey' Blood Drive Upcoming

WATERLOO, Iowa (September 26, 2011) -Those who help save lives this fall by presenting to donate blood will have the opportunity to see a Waterloo Black Hawks hockey game, courtesy of the Black Hawks, KWWL-TV and the American Red Cross. On October 1, eligible donors are invited to join the Black Hawks at Young Arena for the Second Annual `Give Blood, Watch Hockey' Red Cross Blood Drive.

Every presenting donor will receive a complimentary Waterloo Black Hawks ticket to the December 11th game against the Lincoln Stars. In addition, presenting donors can enter a raffle to win an Action Pack of tickets good for any game during the 2011 regular season or tickets to the Black Hawks home opener on October 15 where they take on the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

Saturday, October 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Young Arena, 125 Commercial Street, Waterloo

Sponsored by the Waterloo Black Hawks and KWWL-TV

"This is a great opportunity to give back to your community and watch your hometown hockey team in action," said Greg Novinska, CEO of the American Red Cross Badger-Hawkeye Blood Services Region. "Donating blood takes just an hour, and you can make a difference in the lives of patients in Iowa and throughout the nation."

The local Red Cross Blood Services Region serves community hospitals as well as large medical centers in Iowa, such as Clarinda Regional Health Center, Central Community Hospital, Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare.

Nationally, the Red Cross serves more than 3,000 hospitals and is responsible for collecting and distributing about half of the nation's blood supply. As a national network, the Red Cross can quickly send blood to where it is needed. While local blood needs are always met first, blood donations can also help loved ones across the country and those who travel outside their communities for medical care.

How to Donate Blood

Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver's license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
