SAN JOSE - High Desert's Daniel Carroll started the game with a home run before three Mavericks pitchers combined on a shutout in a 2-0 victory over the San Jose Giants on Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium. The Giants knocked out eight hits in the contest, but left nine runners on base and lost for just the second time in their last nine games. The defeat dropped San Jose's overall record to 81-43.

Ehire Adrianza (3-for-4, 2B) had three hits, including the Giants' only extra-base hit of the night, to lead the offense. Gary Brown (2-for-3, SB) and Juan Ciriaco (2-for-4) also finished with two hits apiece.

Tom Vessella started on the mound for San Jose and immediately allowed a run when Carroll hit the second pitch of the game over the fence in left field. The leadoff home run was Carroll's 14th round-tripper of the season.

The Giants' best chance to get on the scoreboard was in the bottom of the first inning as Brown singled to begin the frame. Adrianza then reached base on an infield single with Brown taking third when the shortstop Leury Bonilla threw wildly to first for an error. However, Mavericks starting pitcher Jon Hesketh pitched out of trouble with a strikeout of Nick Noonan before Tommy Joseph flied out to shallow right and Ryan Cavan struck out swinging.

High Desert extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third as Shaver Hansen singled with one out before Bonilla doubled down the left field line with two outs to put runners on second and third. Vessella then plunked Jamie McOwen to load the bases while Steven Proscia followed with a grounder to first that was mishandled by Luke Anders for an error as Hansen scored to make it 2-0.

Vessella (3-3) only allowed one hit over the next three innings, but still suffered the loss for San Jose. The left-hander worked a season-high tying six innings with two runs (one earned) and four hits allowed. He walked one and struck out four.

The Giants put a runner in scoring position in the third as Adrianza doubled with two outs, but was stranded when Noonan popped out. San Jose threatened again in the fifth as Brown singled with two outs and stole second, however Adrianza grounded out to end the inning. In the seventh, consecutive two-out singles from Ciriaco and James Simmons put the potential tying run on base, but High Desert reliever Austin Hudson induced Brown to bounce into a fielder's choice.

Still trailing by two runs, the Giants brought the potential winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but could not breakthrough. Facing reliever Willy Kesler, Cavan drew a leadoff walk and Ciriaco singled up the middle with two outs, but Simmons struck out swinging on a 2-2 pitch to end the game.

Hudson (4-4) was credited with the win after tossing four scoreless innings out of the bullpen. He surrendered four hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Hesketh struck out six with no walks and three hits allowed over the first four innings while Kesler was credited with his eighth save of the year. The three Mavericks pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts and just one walk.
