Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
WILMINGTON, N.C. - Sal Giardina delivered the game-winning hit as the Fayetteville SwampDogs scored four runs in the top of the 11th inning and captured game one of the 2011 Petitt Cup quarterfinals with a 5-1 win over the Wilmington Sharks on Thursday night at Buck Hardee Field.
Giardina's hit came with the bases loaded, immediately following a play at the plate in which Sharks' rightfielder Daniel Aldrich threw out Joe Ford on a force out. Danny Gesick followed with an RBI walk issued by Tyler Deloach, and Dylan Brown and Cody Hudson each had RBI singles to provide insurance runs as the SwampDogs sent ten men to the plate in the inning.
Brandon Huffman (1-0) pitched the final three innings for the SwampDogs to earn the win. Chris Dula (0-1) started the 11th inning for the Sharks and was charged with three of the four runs scored, suffering the loss.
The SwampDogs plated a run in the top of the first after Cody Hudson started the game by reaching on a two-base error and then scored on a groundout by Eric Grabe. It was Grabe's first action since July 23, after he missed ten games with a knee injury.
Neither starter factored in the decision, though both pitched extremely well. Derek Brooks started for the SwampDogs, allowing just a solo homerun to Daniel Aldrich through eight innings. He gave up four hits and walked one while striking out five.
Mat Batts gave up just the one unearned run in the top of the first before shutting down the SwampDogs from there. He gave up three hits and walked two while striking out eight.
The SwampDogs return home for game two on Friday, with Dom Macaluso throwing for Fayetteville against Chris Mazza from Wilmington. The SwampDogs are asking all fans to wear their blue SwampDogs gear to J.P. Riddle Stadium to help "Paint the Swamp blue." Gates will open at 6 p.m., with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
