Tucson Padres News Release

The Salt Lake Bees had a well executed bottom of the tenth inning Sunday and scored the winning run against Brad Brach to beat the Tucson Padres, 3-2. Bees' leadoff hitter Andrew Romine began the bottom of the tenth with his second hit of the night and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alexi Amarista. Efren Navarro then hit a single to right field to end the game and hand the Padres their fifth loss in their last six games.

Tucson's Samuel Deduno had a strong start, pitching seven innings, allowing two runs and striking out eight. The first run he allowed came on a bizarre balk in the fourth when Deduno dropped the baseball while on the mound in a set position with a runner at third base. Later in the fourth Freddy Sandoval hit an RBI double for Salt Lake's second run. The Padres two runs both came on Anthony Rizzo RBIs. Rizzo hit his 21st home run, to tie Matt Clark for the team lead, in the seventh inning and later hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth to tie the game.

The Padres are now 3-8 in extra innings this season and have lost to Salt Lake ten times in 14 tries in 2011. Seven of the Padres ten innings Sunday featured only three Tucson hitters. Rizzo went 2-for-4, picking up half of the Padres four hits.
