Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters (25-22), presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, fell 6-2 to the Joliet Slammers (26-20) Saturday night at the Corn Crib. Slammer starter Jake Renshaw (W, 5-3) pitched a complete game and assured Joliet the series win. Tyler Lavigne (L, 3-6) worked seven innings, striking out eleven Slammers while allowing six hits, three walks, and two earned runs.
For the second consecutive game, Frank Martinez put Normal ahead in the first inning with a two-run home run. Just like Friday night, it was a one-out liner over the right field fence that scored Alvaro Ramirez for a 2-0 CornBelters lead.
Joliet was quick to answer with a run in the second inning. Kyle Maunus reached first on an error, and scored later in the inning on Ben Hewett's groundout.
The Slammers went ahead 3-2 in the fifth inning, when both Bobby Leeper and Trey Manz scored on a single by David Fox. Leeper walked to lead off the inning, and was moved over to second with Manz' base hit. With two outs, Fox lined a single to right that deflected off the glove of a diving Asif Shah.
Hewett and Maunus teamed up for another scoring play in the eighth against CornBelter reliever Marshall Schuler. Hewett picked up a one-out single that plated Maunus to put Joliet up 4-2. Leeper then singled with two out to bring Hewett home, giving Joliet a 5-2 edge.
Joliet scored an unearned run in the ninth off of Donald Furrow, when Fox reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a dropped fly ball to make it a 6-2 game.
Tyler McNeely got the start for Normal in the designated hitter spot, and picked up his first professional hit in the second inning with an infield single. The CornBelters also released outfielder Chris Brown from the team before Saturday's game.
The series finale is set for 6 p.m. Sunday at the Corn Crib. Joliet will send Billy Petrick (3-6, 4.70) to the mound against Bobby Pritchett (5-2, 4.05) of the CornBelters.
