JACKSON GENERALS RECAP: - Birmingham jumped out of the gate Friday night to a 4-0 lead in the first three innings and coasted to a 9-5 victory in the series opener at Pringles Park. The Barons blasted two homeruns and scored their nine runs on 13 hits. The Generals dropped to 5-11 on the second half and are 43-43 overall, at .500 for the first time since April 29th (10-10). Seth Loman was 3-for-5, scoring two times. Alden Carrithers, Jason Bour and Kyle Shelton added two hits each for the Barons. Brandon Bantz provided the Generals only multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3. The loss was given to Mauricio Robles (0-1) in his first Generals start after making four starts for Advanced Class-A High Desert. Robles worked 3.2 innings before getting the hook, giving up four runs on five hits, striking out three and walking four. Birmingham starter Cameron Bayne (2-0) held the Generals hitless until the fourth inning. In Bayne's third Double-A start he gave up two runs on four hits, striking out two and walking four.
AT A GLANCE: Joe Dunigan currently has a 5-game hit streak, batting .375 (6x16) with 4 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 4 RBI. Vinnie Catricala has hit safely in 6 of 9 games with Jackson, batting .400 (14x35) with 6 runs scored, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs and 10 RBI. During this stretch since June 30, he has recorded 5 multi-hit games, including a season-high 4 hits on July 5 at Mississippi.
TODAY'S STARTER: RHP Steven Hensley makes his 8th start of the season tonight and first against the Birmingham Barons. Hensley is looking for his first win of the season (0-4, 4.73). Hensley was activated from the DL on June 29th and is tonight making his 3rd start since coming off the DL and is 0-1, with an 8.22 ERA in his last two starts.
ALUMNI REPORT: Since making his Major League debut on June 17, 2010 West Tenn infielder Dustin Ackley has hit safely in
16 of 18 games, while reaching base safely in 17 games...he is currently batting .295 (18x61) with 10 runs scored, 1 double, 2 triples, 3 home runs and 8 RBI...has a .636 (7x11) average vs. left-handed pitchers, while batting .500 (11x22) after the 6th inning.
IRON BANTZ: Generals catcher Brandon Bantz has made 11 straight starts behind the plate. The Generals have had just one active catcher on the roster since Ralph Henriquez was promoted to Tacoma on June 30th.
PANKOVITS WINS 750: In the team's second try, Generals Manager Jim Pankovits earned his 750th career managerial victory Sunday. This is Jim's first season with the Mariners and Generals and 13th season as a Minor League skipper. Pankovits managed the New York Penn League Affiliate for the Houston Astros, Tri City the previous two seasons, winning the title in 2010.
TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1957 - At Sportsman's Park in St. Louis, the A.L. nips the N.L. 6-5 in the 24th All-Star Game. Both teams score three in the ninth inning, but Minnie Minoso's running catch with the bases loaded chokes off the N.L.'s last rally. 1986 - Atlanta's Dale Murphy does not play in the Braves 7-3 win over the Phillies, ending his consecutive-game streak at 740. Murphy hadn't missed a game since September 1981.
