Hoover, AL - Johermyn Chavez and Joseph Dunigan each homered and combined for five RBI as the Jackson Generals (6-10, 44-43) thrashed the Birmingham Barons (8-9, 48-39), 10-1, in front of 1,108 fans Saturday night at Jackson's Pringles Park.
Birmingham snatched a 1-0 lead in the third inning after Greg Paiml reached on an infield single, stole second base and scored on a RBI single by Alden Carrithers.
The Generals offense came to life if the bottom of the fifth inning when Jackson scored six runs as they sent 11 men to the plate. A grand slam smashed by Chavez along with RBI singles by Vincent Catricala and Brandon Haveman provided the offensive punch for the Generals as they took a five-run lead, 6-1.
Jackson added to their advantage in the seventh inning when Dunigan hammered his fifth home run of the season, a solo blast over the left field wall. Following back-to-back singles by Carlos Triunfel and Leury Bonilla, a RBI double by Scott Savastano plated Triunfel while Bonilla scampered to third base. Vincent Catricala added a two-run double that drove home Bonilla and Savastano as Jackson's lead grew to nine, 10-1.
Steven Hensley (1-4) earned the win for the Generals as the right-hander tossed 6.0 IP with one earned run on 3 hits, 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.
Nevin Griffith (5-5) received the loss for the Barons after he was charged with six runs (four earned) on 8 hits, 3 walks and 5 strikeouts in 4.2 IP.
The Barons and Generals play game three of the four-game series Sunday afternoon with first pitch set for 2:05 p.m. at Jackson's Pringles Park. Birmingham turns to left-hander Charlie Leesman (7-2, 3.39) while Jackson will send righty Tom Wilhelmsen (2-4, 5.77) to the mound.
