July 8, 2011 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release
TACOMA, Wash.- Mark Hallberg rapped a two-run double to left-center in the eighth inning, flipping a one-run deficit into a 4-3 Reno Aces victory over the Tacoma Rainiers in the series opener Thursday at Cheney Stadium.
With the win, Reno extends its lead in the Pacific North Division to nine games over the Rainiers. The Aces are now 18-5 on the season in series openers.
After quickly recovering from an early deficit, Reno led 2-1 for most of the evening. But the Rainiers plated two runs in the sixth inning to regain the lead, 3-2. That lead would hold true until the eighth, when Hallberg delivered the go-ahead extra base hit.
Aces starter Barry Enright allowed three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts, though did not figure into the decision. The win went to Jordan Norberto (6-1), who worked a scoreless frame. Kam Mickolio threw one pitch to collect his eighth hold, and Bryan Shaw finished the proceedings in the ninth to convert his sixth save of the season.
At the plate for Reno, Cody Ransom and David Winfree finished with two hits apiece. Tony Abreu went 0-for-4, halting his career-best and franchise-record hitting streak at 24 games.
The loss fell to Tacoma's Josh Lueke (2-4), who surrendered Hallberg's double in the eighth. Rainiers starter Charlie Haeger held the Aces to just two runs on four hits over seven innings in a 122-pitch effort.
The Aces and Rainiers will lock horns again on Friday night. RHP Gaby Hernandez (2-2, 9.00 ERA) toes the slab for Reno, while Tacoma will counter with LHP Luke French (5-6, 6.09 ERA). First pitch from Cheney Stadium is set for 7:05 p.m. PT, and the action can be heard live on Fox Sports 630 AM or via www.RenoAces.com.
The Aces return home Thursday, July 14 for an eight-game homestand with Colorado Springs and Fresno. Tickets are available at RenoAces.com, the Aces Ballpark box office or by phone at (775) 334-7000. Discounted group tickets for your next event are available today.
