
G-Braves Sweep Doubleheader

Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Gwinnett Braves swept a doubleheader against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Tuesday, May 24, at Coca-Cola Park, in Allentown, PA. Due to a postponement on Monday night, the G-Braves faced off against the IronPigs in two 7-innning games on Tuesday starting at 10:35 a.m. RHP Julio Teheran (4-0) earned the win for Gwinnett in the first game followed by RHP Todd Redmond (3-4) for the Braves. With the victories, the Gwinnett Braves (24-21) now pull into a tie for first place with the Durham Bulls (24-21) in the International League South division.
Game One:
It Was Over When: In the top of the third inning, OF Stefan Gartrell hit the first of three doubles, allowing OF Jose Constanza to score. The G-Braves would hold onto the lead for the rest of the game.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: RHP Julio Teheran was brilliant as usual. The Braves top organizational prospect pitched 6.0 IP allowing 6 H, 1 R, unearned, 2 BB and struck out 6. RHP Cory Gearrin came in to close things out. He finished the day throwing an inning allowing 3 H, 2 R/ER, and 2 BB.
At the plate: Gartrell led the offense for the G-Braves in the first game. He finished going 3-for-4 with 3 2B, 4 RBI and 2 R. Constanza also had a solid game going 2-for-4 with 3 R, and a SB. The first six batters in the Braves order had hits today, while the first four hitters had multi-hit games.
The Opposition:
On the Mound: RHP Jose Contreras started for the IronPigs in a rehab appearance. He threw 2.0 IP allowing 2 H, tossing 20 pitches, 14 for strikes. RHP Nate Bump (2-4) earned the loss for the IronPigs and tossed 3.0 IP allowing 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, and 4 K's.
At the Plate: OF Rich Thompson went 2-for-3 with a R, BB SB. He was caught stealing second base by Teheran/J.C. Boscan and was picked off by Teheran at first base.
Game Two:
It Was Over When: In the top of the second inning, Constanza tripled allowing SS Brandon Hicks and the newest member of the G-Braves, OF Jeff Fiorentino, to score. The G-Braves took a 3-0 lead and would not look back.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Newly named International League Pitcher of the Week RHP Todd Redmond showed why he earned those honors. Redmond (3-4) earned the win today pitching 6.0 IP allowing only 2-hits, a BB struck out seven. Redmond lowered his ERA to 2.30 following his performance. RHP Anthony Varvaro finished the shutout, pitching a perfect 7th inning and striking out one.
At the plate: 1B Mauro Gomez broke out at the plate today. Gomez finished the day going 3-for-4 with 2 R, 3 RBI, a solo HR and stole his first base of the season. OF Stefan Gartrell hit his 4th double of the day in the second game. He finished going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Fiorentino did not take long to adjust to life with the G-Braves. Fiorentino went 2-for-3 with 2 R, 2 RBI and a HR.
The Opposition:
On the Mound: RHP Eddie Bonnie (3-4) earned the loss for the IronPigs. He lasted 3.0 IP allowing 6 R/ER with 3 K's. RHP Drew Carpenter came into relieve Bonnie, tossing 2.0 perfect innings with 3 K's. Michael Schwimer closed out the game for the IronPigs throwing the final 2.0 allowing 3 H, 1 R/ER, with 2 K's and a HR allowed.
At the Plate: The IronPigs were held to two hits during the second game of the doubleheader. 2B Pete Orr and SS Brian Bocock were the only members of Lehigh Valley with hits.
On Deck: The G-Braves are off on Wednesday. On Thursday, the G-Braves will travel north to Buffalo, NY to take on the Bisons in a four game set, before heading back home to Coolray Field. The G-Braves will send out LHP Yohan Flande (2-0, 4.26) vs. RHP D.J. Carrasco (1-2, 4.85) for the Bisons. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on the home of the G-Braves, WDUN 550 AM/102.9 FM.
