San Jose Giants News Release
MODESTO - Kelvin Marte limited Modesto to one run over a career-high eight innings as the San Jose Giants rolled to a 9-1 victory over the Nuts on Friday evening at John Thurman Field. Gary Brown and Hector Sanchez hit first-inning home runs and the Giants never trailed en route to earning a split of the four-game series. The win improves San Jose's record to 27-15.
Marte (4-2) allowed just three hits during his stint on the mound. The left-hander walked three, struck out three and induced 11 groundball outs.
Chris Dominguez (3-for-4, 2B) had three hits while Tommy Joseph (2-for-5, 3 RBI) drove home three runs to lead the Giants offensive attack. Brown (1-for-3, HR, RBI) extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a home run to leadoff the contest while Sanchez (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) has now driven home at least one run in 14 straight games.
The Giants immediately jumped on Nuts starter Nick Schnaitmann in the top of the first as Brown started the game with a home run to deep left center field. Brandon Crawford followed with a walk and after Jarrett Parker flied out, Sanchez launched a two-run homer well over the fence down the right field line for a 3-0 advantage.
San Jose added to their lead in the top of the third as Ryan Cavan reached on a two-out error, moved to second when Dominguez walked and scored on Joseph's single up the middle.
The Giants then blew the game open by sending 10 hitters to the plate in the top of the fifth and scoring five times. Parker started the frame with a double to deep right center before Sanchez struck out. After Cavan walked, Dominguez singled sharply into left. However on the play, Parker was tagged out between third and home after a long rundown for the second out of the inning. The rally continued though as Joseph was up next and he lined a single up the middle to plate both Cavan and Dominguez to extend the San Jose lead to 5-0. After Luke Anders walked, Wendell Fairley blooped a single into shallow center to score Joseph with the third run of the frame. Brown then drew a walk before a wild pitch brought home Anders. Brandon Crawford followed with an RBI single into left to cap the fifth-inning scoring and make it 9-0.
Marte allowed just one single - a second-inning hit from Nolan Arenado - over his first five innings. Modesto's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning as Orlando Sandoval belted a solo homer to deep left center field. Marte though recovered to set down the next two batters and then worked around a one-out single in the seventh. The Giants starter followed with a perfect bottom of the eighth before returning to the mound in the ninth. However, Marte walked the first two batters of the frame to end his night as Mitch Lively was summoned from the bullpen. Lively promptly walked the next hitter on four pitches to load the bases, but worked out of trouble inducing Mike Zuanich to pop out before Scott Robinson struck out and Kiel Roling flied out.
Schnaitmann (2-5) suffered the loss for the Nuts after surrendering all nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings.
