DES MOINES, Iowa - Ramon Ortiz allowed one earned run on four hits as the Iowa Cubs (13-13) beat the Round Rock Express (16-10) 3-1 in Pacific Coast League Action Wednesday night at Principal Park. Ortiz (1-1) lasted 7.0 innings while walking one and striking out five to get the win.

The Cubs got on the board first in the second inning on Chris Robinson's RBI single. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Express starter Michael Kirkman walked Fernando Perez to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead.

The Express scored their only run in the seventh when Brad Nelson scored on Doug Deeds' sacrifice fly. Nelson had earlier doubled to right field and advanced to third on Luis Cruz's single.

The Cubs added another run in the bottom of the seventh on Chad Tracy's throwing error that allowed Robinson to score from second base.

Kirkman (0-3) lasted 7.0 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. This was Kirkman's longest outing and first quality start of the season.

Zach Phillips pitched the eighth in relief without allowing a run on one hit and one strikeout.

The Express and Cubs close out their four-game series Thursday at 12:05 p.m. CDT at Principal Park. Right-hander Neil Ramirez (2-1, 1.69 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Express, while former Rangers' farmhand Thomas Diamond (0-2, 8.86 ERA) will pitch for the Cubs.
