Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - A pair of home runs proved too much for Tacoma Rainiers to overcome, falling to the Tucson Padres 5-4 in front of 2,923 fans at Cheney Stadium on Tuesday night.
Two home runs accounted for all five of the Padres runs, with the first coming in the top of the first inning. After singles from Luis Durango and Aaron Cunningham, first baseman Anthony Rizzo hit his eighth home run of the year to give Tucson a 3-0 edge.
The Padres extended their lead in the fourth thanks to another home run, this one a two-run shot. Infielder Alex Cintron led off the inning with a single and one out later former Rainier and current Tucson catcher Guillermo Quiro went deep to give the Padres all the offense they would need in the outing..
The Rainiers also relied on a home run to make their first appearance on to the scoreboard in Tuesday's outing. With outfielder Carlos Peguero aboard on first base, designated hitter Mike Carp hit his fourth home run of the season to cut Tacoma's deficit down to 5-2.
Tacoma looked ready to rally after notching two runs in the seventh inning. Outfielder Mike Wilson scored on a groundout by Johan Limonta and Matt Tuiasosopo delivered a RBI-double, but the offense stopped there for the Rainiers.
Starter Luke French (0-4) was dealt the loss for Tacoma after surrendering five runs on nine hits over six innings of work for the Rainiers, while walking one and fanning five. Relievers Manny Delcarmen and Josh Lueke combined to allow just two hits with three strikeouts over three scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Rainiers (9-17) take the field for the third game of their four-game series with the Tucson Padres at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday. Right-hander Blake Beavan (1-0, 5.60) is slated to take the mound for Tacoma, with right-hander John Leicester (1-0, 2.84) scheduled to start for the Padres. The game can be heard live on South Sound Sports 850-AM or streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
