Salem, VA (May 4, 2011) - The Indians plated three unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning, taking advantage of a pair of Salem errors that prolonged the frame en route to a 5-1 victory over the Salem Sox in front of 3,086 at LewisGale Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Kinston win counts as a Tuesday triumph; the two teams resumed the suspended game from Tuesday night at 11 AM.

Indians lefthander T.J House earned the win with six shutout innings out of the bullpen, in which he surrendered just one hit and four walks. The Red Sox managed just four hits against the quartet of Kinston hurlers, a group that struck out nine but walked six. Even still, Salem went 0-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven men on base.

With the game all square at one through four innings, Red Sox righthander Pete Ruiz induced an apparent inning-ending ground ball with two outs and a man at second in the top of the fifth. Kolbrin Vitek's throw was low, however, and Michael Almanzer's scoop attempt was unsuccessful, allowing Dan DeGeorge to scurry home from second to give Kinston a 2-1 lead. The next batter, Bo Greenwell, worked a walk, and the following Indian hitter, Chase Burnette, also reached an a error when second-baseman Zach Gentile fumbled a infield chopper. That miscue loaded the bases, and Abner Abreu made the Red Sox pay, blasting a two-run double off the left-field wall to make it 4-1. Salem threw out Burnette at home plate to end the inning, but the damage had already been inflicted.

Salem twice put two runners on base during the final four innings of the ballgame, but possessed nary a clutch hit on the afternoon. Shannon Wilkerson went 2-4 with a double, Salem's only extra-base hit in the game. Jeremy Hazelbaker and Peter Hissey picked up the other hits. Both Vitek and Dan Butler walked three times each, but never were able to round the bases and score.

The Indians often quelled Salem momentum with twin-killers, recording two separate strike 'em out-throw 'em out double plays and turning a more orthodox 6-4-3 double play too.

Both Abreu and DeGeorge finished with two hits apiece for the Indians, who improved to 10-15 with the win. The Red Sox fell to 17-7 leading into the weekend series against Myrtle Beach.

The Pelicans and Sox have been neck-and-neck atop the Carolina League Southern Division for most of the season, and the two talented clubs meet for the first time in 2011 on Thursday at LewisGale Field. Ryan Pressly will start for Salem opposite Ryan Kelly for Myrtle Beach, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
