Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

Nashville, TN - Johnny Giavotella drove in the winning run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to lift Omaha to a tense 2-1 win over Nashville Monday night in the third of a four-game series at Greer Stadium. The Storm Chasers earned their eighth straight victory to improve to 12-7 on the season and maintain their lead atop the American Conference North Division.

Omaha starter Everett Teaford retired the first 13 hitters he faced before Nashville strung together three singles in the home fifth to produce the game's first run.

The Storm Chasers answered in the next half inning against Frankie De La Cruz when David Lough singled, moved to second base on an error, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored to tie the game on Eric Hosmer's base hit to leftfield. Hosmer would finish with three of Omaha's seven hits but Mike Moustakas lost his 12-game hitting streak after going 0-for-4.

Both starters pitched extremely well but were not involved in the decision. De La Cruz departed after seven innings, allowing a lone run on five hits, striking out seven and not issuing a walk while Teaford yielded a run on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks over his six frames on the hill.

Hosmer opened the ninth with a single and was nearly doubled up on a deep fly ball off the bat of Clint Robinson for the final out of the inning. He took advantage of his renewed opportunity on the basepaths by stealing second base and scoring the decisive run when Giavotella laced a double to centerfield.

Luis Mendoza set down the side in turn in the bottom of the ninth to polish off Omaha's sixth victory in seven games against the Sounds this season. The right-hander gave up just one hit and and fanned three over three scoreless innings to earn his first win of the year.

The series concludes Tuesday morning with left-hander Danny Duffy making the start for Omaha against Nashville southpaw Sam Narron. Coverage of the game gets underway at 10:45 am and can be heard locally on KOIL AM 1180 and online at omahastormchasers.com.
