Portland, Maine- The Reading Phillies earned their first win of the season on Friday night at Hadlock Field defeating the Portland Sea Dogs 7-5 before a crowd of 3,058. Portland drops to 1-1 on the season.
Down 7-2 in the bottom of the ninth, the Sea Dogs rallied for three runs, but fell just short as Ryan Lavarnway grounded out to first to end the game. Portland loaded the bases with singles from Will Middlebrooks and Ryan Dent along with a walk to Che-Hsuan Lin. Middlebrooks scored on a ground out by Alex Hassan. Jorge Padron gave the Sea Dogs hope when his single up the middle scored both Dent and Lin.
Phillies starting pitcher Austin Hyatt (1-0) held the Portland offense to one run on four hits in five innings of work to earn the win. Hyatt struck out six and walked three batters.
Reading jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Matt Rizzotti scored on an RBI single from Michael Spidale. Spidale would score on a double off the bat of Tuffy Gosewisch.
The big blow came in the third when Cody Overbeck blasted a three run homer to center field as Reading took a commanding 5-0 lead. Reading added a run in the fourth with a RBI single by Felix Hernandez.
Portland starter Brock Huntzinger (0-1) lasted 3.2 innings in his Double-A debut, surrendering six runs on eight hits. Jeremy Kehrt pitched well in relief. His lone blemish in 4.1 innings of work was yielding a solo home run to Chris Frey in the seventh.
Alex Hassan paced the Portland offense collecting three hits on the night while driving in two runs. Tim Federowicz added two hits, including his first Double-A home run, a solo shot in the seventh inning.
The Sea Dogs and Reading Phillies are back in action Saturday at 1:00 PM at Hadlock Field. Right-handed pitcher Stolmy Pimentel (0-0) is scheduled to make his Double-A debut for the Sea Dogs. Lefty Ryan Edell (0-0) will be on the hill for the Phillies.
