AUSTIN, TX Oct 5, 2010 -The Austin Toros today announced the start of the 2010-11 Healthy Hoopsters program. The Toros will kick off the program in conjunction with Murchison Elementary School (Pflugerville) and their annual observance of International Walk to School Day on Oct 6, 2010 at 7:00 a.m. The Healthy Hoopsters program promotes healthy living among youth in Central Texas.

The obesity rate among children in Texas has doubled in the past 20 years and is steadily on the incline. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, more than 35 percent of all children in Texas are overweight or obese. In an effort to assist in decreasing that growing statistic, the Healthy Hoopsters program seeks to motivate Texas youth to make healthy lifestyle decisions and rewards their efforts.

The Healthy Hoopsters program runs like a basketball game divided into four quarters that aim to influence nutrition, exercise, reading and good behavioral habits. Once the first and second quarter tasks are completed, youth can contact the Toros office and receive an exclusive Toros pedometer to track their steps daily. Additionally, after completing the third and fourth quarters, youth will be eligible to receive a free Toros t-shirt, a ticket to an Austin Toros home game and recognition at halftime for completing the program. Youth may participate individually or as part of a class or school program.

"Childhood obesity is a big problem in our country and as community ambassadors, the Toros are committed to help in this important fight," said Peter Lubell, Toros Chief Operating Officer. "Our Healthy Hoopsters program has the potential to change the lives of thousands of students throughout Central Texas."

The Toros are partnering with the United States Army, HEB, Texas Med Clinic, Capital Printing, and Community Impact Newspaper to offer the program to central Texas youth. For more information call 512-236-8333 or visit austintoros.com.

The Toros open the 2010-11 season at Cedar Park Center on Saturday, November 27th at noon against the RGV Vipers. Season and group tickets are available now by calling the Toros office at (512) 236-8333.
