Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, Mass. - Worcester starter Chris Farley threw all ten innings for the victory as the Tornadoes defeated the Rox, 3-1, in the final Can-Am League contest of the season at Campanelli Stadium on Monday evening.
Farley (7-7) fanned ten hitters, walked four, and gave up just five hits on the evening for the Tornadoes, who were eliminated from playoff contention earlier with New Jersey's 9-3 win over Quebec.
The only scoring threat through the first nine innings on the Brockton side came in the fourth, when 2B Scott Wearne drew a leadoff walk, followed by a single from C Shawn Williams. DH Melvin Falu then singled to center, but Wearne was thrown out at the plate by Worcester CF Danny Santiesteban on the play to keep the game scoreless. From there, the Rox did not register a hit through the next five innings.
Brockton's staff was nearly as impressive, as starter Nick Tyson and three relievers shut out Worcester in the game's first nine innings, before the Tornadoes scratched out three runs off of Jimmer Kennedy (0-1) in the tenth. Santiesteban, DH Rick Asadoorian and RF Billy Cather led off the inning with three consecutive singles; 2B Christian Acosta then doubled home Santiesteban and Asadoorian, and LF Ryan Crespi singled in Cather to make it a 3-0 game.
The Rox (27-19 second half, 54-39 overall) made some noise with two outs in the tenth. CF Chris Valencia singled and scored on a double by Wearne, but Farley struck out Williams to end the game and give Worcester the victory.
Tyson blanked Worcester (23-23 second half, 42-51 overall) in five innings of work, allowing just four base knocks. Wayne Lundgren, in his first relief appearance of the season, threw two scoreless innings, and Brad Hertzler and Colin Lynch kept the Tornadoes at bay for an inning each.
Monday's attendance was 1,488, giving the Rox 100,092 in 46 openings for the season.
The Brockton loss gave Pittsfield the second-half championship, with the Rox finishing one game back. Brockton will face the Colonials in the first round of the playoffs, starting Wednesday night at Campanelli Stadium at 7:05 p.m. League wins leader Mike Smith (12-3) takes the mound for the Rox, with the Pittsfield starter yet to be announced.
