Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums used some late inning heroics to end the regular season in fine fashion, downing the Washington Wild Things 4-3 in front of a Beach Bums record crowd of 8,211 on Fan Appreciation Night at Wuerfel Park.
Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Beach Bums saw Brad Miller and C. J. Ziegler reach on singles. Before Jonathan Alia came up, Jason Codiroli came in to pinch-run for Ziegler. Alia laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. Brandon Howard came up and flared a double down the leftfield line to score both runners for a 4-3 lead.
The inning before, Traverse City tied the game when Washington pitcher, Chris Bennett, balked with runners on the corners only to have the Wild Things tally a run in the top of the eighth to go back up 3-2.
Washington had taken a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and third innings on a pair of RBI hits from Jon Kourie. The Beach Bums got one of the runs back in the fourth on a Brad Miller double followed by an Alia single.
Bryan Banes (4-4) got the win in relief pitching two innings. David Slovak earned his third save of the year with a perfect ninth. With his start, Kevin Reese tied the Frontier League record of 22 games started on the season. Jonny Bravo tossed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Eryk McConnell (3-6) took the loss for Washington.
The win was a record win for TC who became the first team ever in league history to sweep a 12-game season series from an opponent. In the victory, J. T. Hall became just the second player in Beach Bums history along with Nick Batkoski to play in 96 games in a season.
Traverse City will begin the East Division Series at Windy City on Thursday. All playoff games can be heard on Sunny County 101.9. The pregame show on Thursday and Friday will begin at 7:45 p.m. The first Beach Bums home playoff game will take place on Saturday, September 11 at 7:05 p.m. To accommodate fans, the Beach Bums ticket office and gift shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday and resume regular hours on Tuesday.
