Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
The first contest of the evening ended with the Yanks on top, 5-2; a continuation of the Renegades' second home game of the year, the game resumed in the bottom of the 2nd inning, tied at 2. In the first installment of this game (on 6/22), Renegades designated hitter Nick Schwaner hit his first professional home run and collected a pair of runs batted in, for which he now receives official credit. Tonight, the Renegades had just one hit and two walks over their eight at-bats.
Staten Island Yankees starter Zachary Varce (W, 1-1), who also started the game on 6/22, struck out nine Renegades hitters tonight and two on 6/22. Varce's total of 11 strikeouts in the game matches a season-high by a starting pitcher against Hudson Valley, previously achieved by John Gast at Batavia on August 13th. Staten Island righthander Chase Whitley relieved Varce, earning the save with two shutout innings (4 SO/1BB).
In the second game of the night, neither team scored until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Junior Rodriguez reached on an error with two outs. The next two batters, Renegades outfielders Chris Winder and Brian Bryles, hit back-to-back triples, breaking a 19-inning scoreless streak (dating to the 7 th inning of the 8/31 game at Tri-City). The 'Gades led 2-0 heading to the sixth, when Steven Tinoco doubled and later crossed the plate on a 2-out error, ending the scoring for the night.
Hudson Valley starter Devin Fuller (W, 2-3) pitched his best game of the year, allowing just two hits and a pair of walks in six shutout innings. Austin Hubbard pitched a scoreless ninth for his eleventh save in twelve opportunities, closing the door on a 3-0 victory.
The Renegades (35-34) play their final road game of the season tomorrow night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark against the Staten Island Yankees. First pitch will be thrown at 7:05 pm.
