South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays announced today that former Stingrays forward Spencer Carbery has been named the team's assistant coach. Carbery, 28, will join former player and current Stingrays Head Coach Cail MacLean behind the bench for the 2010-11 season.
"It is a tremendous opportunity from the organization and from Cail," said Carbery. "I will miss playing the game, but I look forward to helping younger players develop."
Carbery, who played for the Stingrays from 2008-2010, was a member of the 2009 Kelly Cup Championship team and received the first-ever Jerry Zucker Community Service Award in March 2009. While with the Stingrays, the Victoria, BC native scored 22 goals and 26 assists for 48 points in 94 games. Before arriving in North Charleston, Carbery skated for the Bakersfield Condors, Fresno Falcons and Stockton Thunder of the ECHL and the Tulsa Oilers of the CHL.
"As a player, Spencer was a consummate pro and a great leader," said MacLean. "He consistently gave his team an honest effort, was courageous on the ice and led with an even temperament. Those qualities along with Spencer's experience and passion for the game of hockey will make him a huge asset behind the bench."
Known for his leadership in the locker room, Carbery served as an alternate captain in both seasons with the Stingrays.
The promotion follows a team history of Stingrays players moving into coaching. Former goaltender Jason Fitzsimmons stood between the pipes for the Stingrays for three seasons, served as an assistant coach from 1998-2002 and head coach from 2002-2007. Former defenseman Jared Bednar played for the Stingrays from 1995-1998 and 1999-2002, stood as an assistant coach under Fitzsimmons from 2002-2007 and head coach from 2007-2009. Bednar is currently the head coach of the Peoria Rivermen of the American Hockey League after serving as an assistant for the Abbotsford Heat of the AHL last season. Current head coach MacLean dressed for three seasons with the Stingrays from 2005-2008, promoted to assistant coach for the 2008-2009 season and named to the top spot prior to the 2009-2010 campaign.
The Stingrays drop the puck on their 18th season of hockey in the Low Country on Friday, October 22 against the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:35 p.m. at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Opening Weekend is set for Friday, November 5, Saturday, November 6 and Sunday, November 7 against the Florida Everblades at 7:05 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. at North Charleston Coliseum.
