Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - As the BayBears continue their march towards the postseason, they were able to shave two games off the schedule on Sunday night at Hank Aaron Stadium with a 5-3 victory over the Huntsville Stars in game one followed by a 2-1 loss in the nightcap.
Josh Collmenter (8-2) was graced with a four-run first-inning lead from his teammates. Collin Cowgill and Bryan Byrne each drew one-out walks against Huntsville (64-68, 31-31) starter Wily Peralta (1-3) with Konrad Schmidt following up by cracking an opposite-field three-run homer. Ryan Wheeler added to the cause with a solo shot to give the BayBears (71-58, 35-26) their second set of back-to-back home runs this season.
Collmenter made it through five innings while uncorking two runs on four hits. He fanned six and was touched up for a couple of runs in the fourth when Caleb Gindl cracked a two-out, two-run double to bring home Zelous Wheeler and Taylor Green.
After the BayBears got one run back in the bottom of the fifth on a Taylor Harbin RBI groundout, Josh Ellis allowed a run in the sixth on an RBI knock by pinch-hitter Anderson Machado. Daniel Stange (S, 11) replaced Ellis after Machado's hit and promptly picked Machado off first base to end the threat. Stange worked a scoreless seventh to give the BayBears their second straight win.
In game two, Tom Layne (12-7) pitched solidly over six frames as he punched out six including the last four hitters he faced. His only problems came in the third when he surrendered four hits including a two-run double by Gindl to bring home Andre Lamontagne (4-3) and Brett Lawrie.
Lamontagne struck out nine BayBears over 5.2 innings while only coughing up three hits. Two of those came in the bottom of the sixth with two away as Chris Rahl cracked a single and scored on a two-base hit by Bryan Byrne.
Jeremy Jeffress (S, 3) assisted Lamontagne through the rest of the night with four consecutive groundouts including a hot shot off the bat of Sean Coughlin that Green made a play on at third.
With a week left in the regular season, the BayBears are tied for first place in the South Division with the Jacksonville Suns. They sit three games on top of the Biscuits for the South Division wild card with their magic number currently down to five.
The BayBears welcome the Chattanooga Lookouts to "The Hank" on Tuesday night at 7:05 to start the regular season's final home series which will last through Thursday.
