Sky Sox Win Pitcher's Duel Over Zephyrs 2-1

August 6, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

In a rare pitcher's duel at Security Service Field, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox edged the New Orleans Zephyrs 2-1 on Friday night in front of 5,744 fans. The game took just 2:06 minutes which is the shortest nine-inning home game for the Sky Sox this year.

Chaz Roe and Alejandro Sanabia started for the Sox and Zephyrs respectively and both were very much on their games at high altitude although neither factored in the decision. Roe tossed seven innings giving up just one run on six hits while striking out seven. Likewise, Sanabia gave up just one run in his six innings of work while punching out three.

New Orleans got on the board first with a run in the top of the third. Shortstop Gookie Dawkins led off the inning with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice by Sanabia. The next batter, centerfielder Cameron Maybin, drove in Dawkins with a double to put the Zephyrs up 1-0.

The Sox were able to tie the game up at one all in the sixth. Chris Frey started the inning with a triple to right-center field but it looked like the Sox would strand him there after Paul Phillips flew out to shallow center and Roe grounded out to third. So with two outs, the Springs needed a clutch hit and it was delivered by Eric Young Jr. who singled home Frey on a 1-1 pitch to knot the game up.

The contest would remain tied at one all the way into the bottom of the ninth where some late inning heroics would be needed. Young Jr. led off the inning and ripped a 3-1 pitch down the left-field line that bounced around in the corner and allowed Young to scamper around the bases for a triple, the second lead-off triple of the game for the Sky Sox. This time around though Colorado Springs wouldn't wait for a two-out hit as Jonathan Herrera stepped to the plate and singled to right to score Young and send the crowd home happy.

Franklin Morales (2-0) picked up the win after throwing a scoreless top of the ninth. The win was his 16th as a member of the Sky Sox which ties him for the 12th most in franchise history. The loss went to James Houser (0-1) who surrendered the ninth inning run.

The final game of the four-game series is set for tomorrow night at 7:05 PM (MDT) as the Sky Sox host "Goose Gossage Night". The first 1,500 fans through the gates will receive a special Goose Gossage figurine and Gossage himself will be in attendance signing autographs from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The Sky Sox will send out RH Esmil Rogers (3-3, 5.75) to face RH Nic Ungs (1-0, 0.00).
