Spikes Get Back On Track With 2-1 Win Over Doubledays

AUBURN, NY - The State College Spikes were held to just two hits in the game, but took advantage of two eighth-inning errors by the Auburn Doubledays to plate a pair of runs and come from behind to earn a 2-1 victory at Falcon Park on Saturday night.

State College (21-21) mustered two doubles in the first two innings before being held out of the hit column for the remainder of the game. Matt Curry and Chase Lyles provided the two-baggers, with Curry's nearly scoring Cole White in the first inning. White was tagged out, however, representing the Spikes' best scoring opportunity until the eighth.

In that inning, Lyles led off and was hit by a pitch. An error by Auburn (15-27) reliever Zach Outman (0-2) trying to retire the lead runner on Miguel Mendez's sacrifice bunt attempt put runners on first and second with no outs. Kelson Brown then dropped down a sacrifice bunt of his own to move the runners to second and third. After Mel Rojas, Jr. drew a walk, Gift Ngoepe then bounced a grounder up the middle, and Doubledays second baseman Matt Johnson missed a tag before throwing the ball away to allow Lyles and Mendez to score.

Auburn had taken a 1-0 lead in the fifth when a Spikes error kept the inning alive for Markus Brisker's RBI single to score Johnson from second.

Casey Sadler (3-0) earned the victory for the State College, pitching three perfect innings from the sixth through the eighth to keep the Spikes within striking distance. Sadler has now thrown nine straight scoreless innings. Ryan Beckman (3) pitched the ninth and loaded the bases with one out, but came back with a double play ball to end the game and preserve his third save in as many opportunities.

State College starter Zack Von Rosenberg allowed just one unearned run in five innings of work, yielding three hits and a walk while striking out three.

Drew Hutchison was tremendous in his start for Auburn, pitching six scoreless innings and allowing just two hits and a walk. Hutchison also struck out seven in the effort and retired the last 13 batters he faced. Outman took the loss for the Doubledays after allowing two unearned runs in 1 1/3 innings on two walks and a hit batsman.

Auburn had the only player to collect multiple hits in the game, with Johnson going 2-for-4 and cracking a double for the Doubledays' first hit of the contest.

Sunday, the Spikes and Doubledays finish their two-game mini-series at Falcon Park with a 6:05 p.m. matchup. State College will send left-hander Zack Dodson (1-2) to the mound for his first start since July 15th. Auburn will counter with right-hander Daniel Webb (0-3), who has a 7.52 ERA over the past month.
