
Tigers and Valleycats Split Doubleheader

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (22-19) beat the Tri-City ValleyCats (18-23) 2-1 in game one of a doubleheader before losing the nightcap 3-1 before 1,620 fans at Dodd Stadium on Saturday night. In game one of the doubleheader, the ValleyCats scored a run in the fifth inning against Connecticut LHP Rayni Guichardo (3-2). SS Ben Orloff (1-2) reached base with a two-out walk and scored on a double by 2B Kike Hernandez (1-3) for a 1-0 ValleyCats lead.
The Tigers scored two runs in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead. C Julio Rodriguez (2-2) singled and moved to third base on a single by LF Les Smith (1-2). Smith took second base on the throw in from the outfield and there were runners at second and third base with nobody out.
SS Brett Anderson (0-1) and RF Chao-Ting Tang (0-1) each hit sacrifice flies to score Rodriguez and Smith respectively and make it 2-1.
Guichardo pitched six innings to get the win. RHP Tyler White worked a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his second save. The ValleyCats scored first in game two of the doubleheader. SS Jacke Healey (1-3) hit a two-run home run in the second inning against Connecticut RHP Miguel Mejia (2-1) to give Tri-City a 2-0 lead. The Tigers scored a run in the fourth inning when LF Ryan Enos (2-2) led off the inning with a single and 1B James Robbins (1-3) doubled.
Tri-City re-took a two-run lead with a single run in the fifth inning. 3B Ben Orloff (2-4) singled, stole second base and went to third base on a throwing error. 2B Kike Hernandez (1-4) grounded out and Orloff scored for a 3-1 lead.
The Tigers and ValleyCats conclude their series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. It's a Sunday Fun Day with kids running the bases after the game presented by Dick's Sporting Goods and Michael's Dairy. It's also CT the Tiger's Birthday with all of his mascot friends at Dodd Stadium on Sunday afternoon. RHP Josue Carreno (2-4, 4.97) gets the start for the Connecticut against RHP Bobby Doran (1-3, 6.21) for Tri-City.
