LOWELL, MA --- The Lake Monsters opened a four-game roadtrip with a 4-3 loss to the Lowell Spinners in New York-Penn League action Saturday evening at LeLechuer Park as Vermont lost for the sixth time in the last seven games and ninth time in the last 12.

Vemont jumped out on top 2-0 in the third as Cole Leonida reached on a fielding error and Connor Rowe followed with a two-run homer to leftfield for his third home run of the season, but the Spinners scored three times in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.

After a fielding error by Jason Martinson and a forceout began the inning, Spinner centerfielder Felix Sanchez stole second and then scored on a throwing error by Leonida as Sanchez stole third base. Lowell then put together five straight singles off Vermont starter Colin Bates, including RBI singles from Miles Head and Bryce Brentz to take the lead.

Vermont was able to keep the lead at one when Rowe threw out Head at the plate on the fifth hit of the inning by Josue Peley, but the Spinners were able to score an unearned run in the fourth on a Kolbrin Vitek RBI single for a 4-2 lead.

The Lake Monsters got that run back in the seventh as Leonida again reached on an error and then scored on a Hendry Jimenez RBI double to cut the deficit to 4-3. Jimenez came to the plate in the ninth with runners on first and second with two outs, but Spinners reliever Wilson Matos was able to knock down a liner and throw Jimenez out at first to give Lowell just its 10th win of the season.

Spinner starter Tyler Wilson (1-3) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over five innings for his first win, while Garrett Rau one unearned run over three innings and Matos a scoreless ninth for his first save. Brentz and Seth Schwindenhammer both had two hits for Lowell (10-32), which won for just the third time (twice against Vermont) in the its last 18 games.

Bates (2-2) gave up four runs (two earned) on 11 hits over five innings, while Neil Holland had four strikeouts in three hitless innings of relief for Vermont (24-17). Rowe and Jimenez both had two hits of the eight hits for the Lake Monsters, who finished with a 14-14 record in the month of July.

The Lake Monsters and Spinners will wrap up the quick two-game series at Lowell on Sunday starting at 1:35 pm. Vermont then heads to Tri-City for a pair of games before returning to historic Centennial Field to start a six-game homestand on Wednesday.
