Eight Run 2nd Inning Leads Hudson Valley to 14-2 Win Over Vermont

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Hudson Valley Renegades scored eight runs on nine hits in the second inning and went on to hand the Vermont Lake Monsters their fourth straight loss with a 14-2 victory in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field.

Hudson Valley sent 12 batters to the plate in the second inning with the first seven reaching safely. They opened the inning with three straight hits, then after a hit batter they collected three more hits off Vermont starter Chris McKenzie. After a forceout for the first out of the inning, the Renegades put together three more singles for the 8-0 lead. Vermont scored single runs in the second and third innings, but the Renegades scored four more times in the fourth inning and added two more in the fifth for the 14-2 lead.

Burt Reynolds was 4-for-5 with a run, double and three RBI for Hudson Valley (17-19), while Elias Otero 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Four other Renegades had two hits and two runs scored as Hudson Valley pounded out 17 hits for the game, 16 of them coming in the first five innings. Starter Wilmer Almonte (1-2) allowed two runs on three hits with three walks and nine strikeouts over five innings for the win, while Adam Liberatore and Omar Benecomo each tossed two scoreless innings with four strikeouts apiece as the Aberdeen pitchers struckout 17 Lake Monsters.

David Freitas, who had his team-record 21-game hitting streak snapped in Vermont's last game on Monday, was 3-for-3 with a walk, run and RBI on Wednesday to raise his batting average back up to the .390 mark. McKenzie (1-1) allowed eight runs on eight hits in 1 1/3 innings for the loss, while Shane Zellers came on the in the fifth inning and allowed two inherited runners to score on a single before tossing four scoreless innings on just one more hit with three strikeouts.

The Lake Monsters remain 2 1/2 games in front of Connecticut for first-place in the Stedler Division despite losing their fourth straight and seventh in the last nine games. Vermont is 23-15 overall as the Lake Monsters hit the halfway point of their 76-game schedule. Vermont and Hudson Valley will play the second of the three-game series on Thursday at Centennial starting at 7:05 pm. It will be Military Appreciation Night at the ballpark and the first 500 adults will receive a pair of Hellfly sunglasses, while it is also "Kids Eat Free Thursday" with the first 600 kids receiving a voucher for a free hot dog, chips and soft drink.
