Mississippi and Tennessee Split Double Header

Pearl, MS- Saturday night, the Mississippi Braves and Tennessee Smokies were rained out, which forced a Sunday double-header. Mississippi lost a four-run lead in the top of the 7th inning following a two out, ground-slam from Robinson Chirinos. With the game tied at six, the Braves collected a game winning base-hit from Antoan Richardson to score Alejandro Machado in the bottom of the 7th to win the game 7-6.

Game one featured Jacob Thompson on the mound for Mississippi vs. Jeremy Papelbon for Tennessee. Thompson struck out seven Smokies, which was a single game season high for Thompson. Thompson left in line for the win but due to the Tennessee comeback, he wound up with a no decision. Papelbon also received a no decision as the bullpens took the decisions. 

Mississippi got on the board first when Donell Linares belted his 10th home run of the season. The homer took place in the bottom of the 2nd and gave Mississippi a 1-0 lead. Tennessee answered right back in the top of the 3rd by scoring twice and taking their only lead of the ball game a 2-1. That lead wouldn't last long, as the Braves plated one run on the bottom of the inning to tie the game a 2-2.

The Braves continued to score runs in their next at bat. In the 4th, Mississippi would bring in a pair of runs to give the Braves a 2-run lead. It was the first of two 2-run innings for the Braves. The next took place two innings later. Mississippi took their biggest lead of the game with a 2-run 6th inning to advance the lead to four runs. With the score 6-2 in favor of the Braves, the game went to the top of the 7th. In the inning, Tennessee collected two base hits and a two-out walk to load the bases for Robinson Chirinos. Chirinos already had 13 home runs on the season and came to the plate to face Juan Abreu, who was one out away from finishing the game. The first pitch of the sequence was blasted by Chirinos over the left-field wall for a game tying grand-slam. 

With the save blown, Mississippi came to the plate needing one run to win the game in the bottom of the 7th inning. Alejandro Machado led off the inning with a base hit and was then bunted over to second base. Antoan Richardson then came up and pulled a hit down the right field line to score Machado and win the ball game. It was Richardson's 4th hit of the game and was key in the Braves win.

Game Two

In game two of the series, Chris Archer dominated the Braves and limited them to just one base hit. The Smokies tallied four runs and beat the Braves 4-0. Despite taking a loss, Randall Delgado pitched well in his double-A debut. Delgado struck out five batters in five innings and gave up just three hits. 

This pitchers duel remained scoreless through four innings. The Smokies finally broke through in the 5th by sending eight batters to the plate, while scoring two runs. The would go on to score one run in each of the next two innings, including a solo home run from Tony Thomas. The only hit the Braves collected came off of the bat of Yasser Gomez, who's single led off the 1st inning. The Braves then went hitless the rest of the game and fell short of sweeping Tennessee.

The double header was the fourth of the year for the Braves, who have split each of the four. Mississippi is now (4-4) in double header ball games. The Smokies are now (11-9) in double headers. The split gave the Smokies the series as the have won three of the first four games in this series.

The final game of the series will take place tomorrow night at 7:05 from Trustmark Park. The Braves will be send RHP Tim Gustafson (3-1; 3.20) to the mound to face RHP Rafael Dolis (1-2; 3.86).
