Danville Otterbots News Release
ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. - The Danville Braves jumped out to an early lead, and were able to shut out the Elizabethton Twins for most of the game to take the first game of the series, 3-2. With the victory, the Braves are back at .500 with an 11-11 record, while the Twins recede to 13-8.
After dropping two to Pulaski at home, it was do or die for the Braves tonight, and, with that in mind, they came out and put together one of their best performances of the season together. The D-Braves cracked starter Adrian Salcedo in the second inning when DH Ryan Delgado scored after a lead-off double on a single by third baseman Joey Terdoslavich.
Danville extended its lead to 2-0 in the third as lefty starter Carlos Perez continued to silence Elizabethton bats in the bottom halves, The second tally was credited to staple center fielder Jason Mowry who scored Elmer Reyes on a sacrifice fly to center.
Perez was able to shut out the Twins through the fifth, with Elizabethton finally getting on the board in the sixth thanks to an RBI single by center fielder Oswaldo Arcia. Coming out in the middle of the sixth, Perez left with the lead after striking out six and lowering his already league-leading ERA to 0.36.
Despite an added Twins run in the ninth, the Braves scored an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single by catcher Jace Whitmer that scored Terdoslavich, securing the win for the Braves. With the win, Perez is now 2-0 on the season, while Elizabethton hurler Salcedo drops to 2-2 after receiving the loss for his seven innings on the mound, allowing all three runs and striking out seven.
For Danville, Terdoslavich led the offensive efforts, going 3-4 on the night with a run scored, a double and an RBI. Elizabethton's Arcia remained solid for the Twins with a 2-3 performance, including a solo home run in the seventh.
Game two of the series in Elizabethton kicks off tomorrow night at 7 p.m. On the mound for the Braves in his second start since joining the Danville squad is Willie Kempf (0-0, 3.00 ERA), who will face off against Elizabethton's Blayne Weller (1-1, 4.19 ERA).
After rounding out the series with Elizabethton on June 16, the Braves will then venture to Pulaski for another three-game road series, before returning home to take on the Mariners once again on July 20.
