Greeneville Astros News Release
GREENEVILLE, TN - After having their last game in Bluefield rained out on Monday night and a scheduled day off on Tuesday, the Greeneville Astros were well rested when they returned to action on Wednesday night. A three-game series, hosting the East Division-leading Burlington Royals at Pioneer Park, got off to a great start for the Astros with a 6-0 shutout.
Greeneville's Ricardo Garcia led off the bottom of the first inning with a double down the right field line. Two batters later, Jhonny Medrano hit his fifth homer of the season on a two-run shot to left field.
After the next five innings were scoreless, Bryce Lane hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Bubby Williams in for a score.
Then, in the eighth inning, Chris Wallace and Marcus Nidiffer connected on back-to-back homers to finish the scoring. Wallace's homerun came with Jhonny Medrano on second base following a double. It was Wallace's team-leading sixth homerun of the season. Meanwhile, Nidiffer is right behind with five on the year, and he also tied a team record by hitting a homerun for a third consecutive game.
Astros' starter Mike Foltynewicz, a 2010 first-round pick, pitched the first four innings, gave up just two hits, and had five strikeouts. His strong start was followed by three good innings from 2010 second-rounder Vincent Velasquez. He gave up one hit and had four strikeouts as he earned his first professional win.
Jeiler Castillo and Brian Streilein each pitched a hitless inning apiece to close the game and secure the shutout.
The Astros face the Royals in game two of the series on Thursday night at Pioneer Park. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm. Gates will open at 6:00pm. It will be a Dollar Hot Dog Night and Thirsty Thursday with discounted drinks available at the concession stands and Tiki Hut.
Tickets are available at the Astros administrative office and online. For more information on the Astros or a complete schedule, visit www.greenevilleastros.com or call (423) 638-0411.
