Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD - In a wet and wild ending in the rain, the Aberdeen IronBirds scored two runs in the ninth inning to beat the Auburn Doubledays, 8-7.
The Doubledays got on the scoreboard against LHP Justin Anderson in the second inning. C Jack Murphy doubled. SS Gustavo Pierre then reached on an error by SS Auburn Donaldson. RF Stephen McQuail then walked, loading the bases with nobody out. 1B Yudelmis Hernandez knocked in Murphy with a ground out to third, giving Auburn a 1-0 lead. A batter later, 2B Oliver Dominguez reached on an infield single. Pierre scored from third on the play, giving the Doubledays a two-run lead.
Auburn tacked on another run in the fourth inning when Hernandez (1) hit a solo home run to right field.
In the fifth, the Doubledays struck again. 3B Matthew Johnson reached on an error by Donaldson at short. LF Marcus Knecht knocked him in with a double, making it 4-0.
Anderson left the game with one out in the fifth. He allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits. He walked three and struck out two.
Rehabbing Baltimore Orioles reliever LHP Mike Gonzalez entered the game for Anderson. He retired the first four batters he faced. With two men down in the sixth, though, Dominguez drilled a solo home run to left-center field, giving Auburn a 5-0 lead.
Gonzalez went 1.2 innings. He allowed an earned run on two hits and struck out two.
Down 5-0 headed into the eighth, the IronBirds rallied. DH Trent Mummey reached on an infield single. 2B Omar Casamayor then hit a ball to shortstop. Pierre threw the ball to second, but Mummey slid in safely. A batter later, 3B Adam Gaylord hit an RBI-single to get the IronBirds on the scoreboard.
That's when things began to unravel for the Doubledays. With runners on first and second, Flacco hit a ground ball to shortstop. Pierre tried to throw the ball to second, attempting to get Gaylord there. Instead, he threw the ball into right field. Two runs scored, making it 5-3. With Flacco on second and two outs, pinch-hitter David Anderson knocked him in with an RBI single, pulling the IronBirds to within one.
C Joe Oliveira worked a walk. RHP Drew Permison then unleashed three wild pitches over the course of two batters, allowing two runs to score, and giving Aberdeen a 6-5 lead.
The Doubledays answered back in their half of the ninth. With one on and two out, C Jack Murphy (1) blasted a two-run homer to right-center field, giving Auburn a 7-6 lead.
Aberdeen didn't quit though. Casamayor led off the bottom of the ninth with a single. LF Kipp Schutz laid down a sacrifice bunt. Gaylord drilled a double over the center fielder Brisker's head, tying the game at seven. Flacco then delivered an RBI-double of his own, to win it for the IronBirds.
RHP T.R. Keating (1-1) got the win. He surrendered two runs (on the two-run homer by Murphy) on one hit in an inning of work. RHP Travis Garrett (1-2) took the loss. He allowed two runs on three hits in just a third of an inning.
