RHP Mike McGuire Sold to Philadelphia Phillies

Augusta, N.J. - July 13, 2010 - The Sussex Skyhawks have sold the contract rights of RHP Mike McGuire to the Philadelphia Phillies organization. The 24-year-old will report to the Lakewood BlueClaws, the Phillies' Class A affiliate in the South Atlantic League.
In eight starts with the Skyhawks this season, McGuire was 3-4 with a 5.29 ERA. In 47.2 innings pitched, the Swarthmore, Pa. native struck out 41 batters and walked 21. He was 2-1 with a 2.65 ERA in three starts at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park.
McGuire was a four-year player at the University of Delaware from 2005 to 2008 before the Cleveland Indians selected him in the 43rd round of the 2008 Major League Baseball amateur entry draft with the 1,311th overall pick. McGuire pitched in 50 games and made nine starts for minor league affiliates of the Indians in 2008 and 2009, compiling an 8-11 record and 4.06 ERA while striking out 113 batters in 113.1 innings. The right-handed hurler will now return to the South Atlantic League where he appeared in 20 games for the Lake County Captains in early 2009.
McGuire becomes the first Sussex player to sign with a Major League organization this summer. The Skyhawks wish him the best of luck for the rest of the 2010 season.
