Winston Rolls Past Salem 9-5
June 29, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release
Winston-Salem, NC (June 29, 2010)- For the third time in three days, the Sox jumped out to an early lead, but Caleb Clay was unable to hold a 4-0 fourth inning advantage as the Winston-Salem Dash scored nine unanswered in a 9-5 victory over the Sox on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. After being staked to the four-run advantage, Clay gave up three runs in the fourth and four in the sixth, capped off with a two-run home run by Ozzie Lewis.
The sixth started ominously for Clay, as the first two batters reached base and advanced to second and third on a groundout from Seth Loman. With one down, Josh Phegley grounded to Will Middlebrooks at third, who fired a strike home to nab Eduardo Escobar attempting to score for the second out. Clay couldn't get the final out of the inning as he ceded a two-run double to Jose Martinez, making his Carolina League debut, to put Winston up 5-4. Lewis followed up the two-bagger with his third round tripper of the series to give the Dash a 7-4 lead through six.
The Sox had a great chance to get back into the game in the seventh after Ryan Dent led off with a double and moved to third on a balk by Winston starter Nate Jones. However, Dent broke for home on a pitch in the dirt, but changed his mind and stumbled on his way back to third. The Sox shortstop ended up in a rundown and was eventually thrown out at the plate for the second out. The mistake was magnified as the Sox put the next two runners on and could have scored multiple runs if not for a fantastic diving catch by Martinez in right to end the inning.
Salem scored in the first inning for the third straight day, scoring twice off Jones. After Alex Hassan walked with one out, Ryan Lavarnway brought him home with a double down the left field line, and later scored on an RBI single from Jorge Padron to put the Sox up 2-0.
Four consecutive hits in the fourth helped Salem double their lead to 4-0. Oscar Tejeda led off with a single and was brought home on a double by Padron. On the next pitch, Padron scampered home on a single by Middlebrooks, appearing in his first game since the All Star Break.
The Dash responded quickly in the fourth with three consecutive doubles off of Clay. Gilmore and Loman's two-baggers both brought runs home, while Loman scored the third run of the frame on a wild pitch to make it 4-3 Salem after four.
Winston added two insurance runs in the eighth on a two-run double by Kenny Williams Jr. off Zach Hammes to make it 9-4 Dash. The Sox loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but only scored one run on a sac fly off the bat of Ryan Lavarnway.
Lavrnway's two runs driven in gave him a Carolina League leading 61 on the year, seven of which came in the past three games. The catcher/DH finished 7-for-13 in the three game set with his 2-for-4 performance Tuesday. Padron accumulated three hits to go along with a double and two RBI. Dent and Tim Federowicz added two hits apiece as part of the Sox 12-hit attack.
Salem returns home for a brief three game home stand with the first half Northern Division champion Frederick Keys. First pitch from Lewis-Gale Field on Wednesday night is set for 7:05 PM, as Miguel Gonzalez gets his fifth start of the year against Frederick's Rick Zagone.
