Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
GREENVILLE, S.C. - June 21, 2010: Greenville's professional hockey team, currently operating as Hockey Greenville, announced today that it has acquired defenseman Julien Brouillette along with forwards Andrew Carroll and Matt Schepke.
The three players complete the future considerations portion of a trade last season that sent Mike Bartlett and Trevor Hendrikx from the Johnstown Chiefs to the Charlotte Checkers at the trade deadline in March. Their play helped Charlotte earn the top seed for the American Conference in this past season's Kelly Cup Playoffs.
"This is a very beneficial trade for our team in Greenville. Brouillette is a talented offensive defenseman who will help on our power play. Carroll and Schepke are gifted offensive players and we fully expect them to contribute to our success on the ice this season," said team president and general manager Neil Smith, who orchestrated the trade while coaching Johnstown last season.
Brouillette, 23, hails from Saint Esprit, Quebec and is entering his fourth year of professional hockey. Last season the defenseman posted career highs in goals (13), assists, (20) and points (33) in just 47 games with the Checkers. His 13 goals were also tied for fourth most among ECHL defensemen. His strong play earned Brouillette the first two AHL promotions of his career. He spent three games with the Providence Bruins and 21 with the Hartford Wolf Pack. Prior to turning professional, the 5-11, 200-pound defender skated four seasons with Chicoutimi of the QMJHL. He amassed 123 points (27G, 96A) in that time and led team defensemen in scoring in his final two seasons.
Carroll is coming off an impressive rookie season that saw him net 30 goals which led all Checkers and were fourth among rookies. A 5-11, 200-pound winger, Carroll racked up 17 assists to finish third on the Checkers with 47 points for the season. The 25-year-old native of Shoreview, Minnesota played his college hockey at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and was a productive winger for the Bulldogs. Carroll racked up 57 points (29G, 28A) over his four collegiate seasons while also serving in a captaincy role in each of his last three seasons. In 2009, Carroll was selected to the Second Team Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for hockey. The award celebrates students who honor a four-year commitment to their university while recognizing their achievements in competition and the community.
Schepke, 25, balanced 26 goals with 20 assists in his rookie season with the Checkers. The 5-11, 200-pound forward was chosen to represent the American Conference at the 2010 ECHL All-Star Game in Ontario, California and produced two goals in the 10-9 shootout victory. Schepke enjoyed a strong collegiate career at Michigan State University with 54 points (28G, 26A) over three seasons. The highlight came in the spring of 2007 with the Spartans winning the NCAA championship over Boston College. Schepke skated in 23 games for the national champions and chipped in five points (3G, 2A) and 14 penalty minutes along the way.
