Myrtle Beach, SC - The Salem Sox commenced a week-long road trip with a unique 8-2 victory over Myrtle Beach at BB&T Coastal Field, scoring all eight runs with two outs to improve to 4-0 on the season against the Pelicans. Not only did all of Salem's tallies come with two away, but in all four innings that Salem plated runs, the first two batters were retired before a single baserunner reached. Ryan Lavarnway led the way with three singles and two RBI, while Oscar Tejeda connected for two doubles and scored twice as the Sox moved to 23-12 at the quarter pole for the 2010 season. Since Winston-Salem also won on Friday, Salem remains one game back in the Carolina League Southern Division.
Alex Wilson picked up the win with a career-high six innings on the bump for the Sox. After yielding a single and a two-out, two-run homer to Gerry Rodriguez in the first inning, Wilson would not surrender a single base hit in his final five innings on the mound. He struck out five and walked one as his record moved to 2-1 on the season.
Salem trailed 2-0 through two, but broke through against Myrtle Beach starter Randall Delgado with two outs in the third. Tejeda reached on an error that prolonged the inning and let Will Middlebrooks smack an RBI double to center field. Lavarnway singled home Middlebrooks to tie it up at two. In the third, Salem once again utilized a two-out gift to score, as Mitch Dening walked and was driven in by David Mailman's towering triple that gave the Sox a 3-2 edge.
Despite the bumpy two-out rallies, Delgado continued to look sharp and illustrated as such by striking out Tejeda and Middlebrooks to begin the fifth. But with two men gone, again the Red Sox were poised to strike. Lavarnway singled, prompting Pelican manager Rocket Wheeler to lift Delgado from the game. Benino Pruneda entered and surrendered three consecutive singles, capped by a bases-loaded two-run hit by Ryan Dent that made it 5-2. Dening then reached on an error by third baseman Samuel Sime, allowing another run to score and Salem led 6-2.
The Sox tacked on another pair in the eighth, with Tejeda's second double of the night driving in Peter Hissey before Lavarnway's third knock brought home Tejeda. Every member of the Red Sox lineup reached base at least once, with only Dening, who walked, being denied a base hit.
Pelican pitching registered 15 strikeouts on the night as every Red Sock batter also struck out at least once. Delgado fell to 1-3, having allowed four runs (two earned) in four and two-thirds innings.
In relief of Wilson, Mitch Herold (two frames) and Lance McClain (one) combined to hold the Pelicans scoreless the rest of the way.
Salem and Myrtle Beach continue their three-game weekend set on Saturday night, with Stolmy Pimentel opposing Brett Oberholtzer on the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
