Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
In a series that had seen just about everything, the Hammerheads and Cardinals went the extra mile to decide the rubber match, with Jupiter ultimately pulling out a 4-3 win in 12 innings.
The Hammerheads (12-17) took the opening game with their first ever no-hitter, while the second game was a Cardinal (17-11) win in a slugfest that saw both teams reach double-digit hits. But it was a dominant bullpen and an inning of productive outs that ultimately allowed Hunter Mense to drive in Emilio Ontiveros for the game-winning, series-deciding run.
Relievers Steve Cishek, Jhan Marinez, Corey Madden and Peter Andrelczyk combined allow just four hits over the final 6.2 innings, striking out 8 Cardinals. Included in that span were perhaps the two biggest outs of the game. In the 11th inning, Madden allowed a leadoff double and a walk, with both then runners moving up on a sacrifice bunt. Manager Ron Hassey called for an intentional walk to load the bases with one out. Madden took a comebacker and tossed it to catcher Robert Taylor, who made the force at home and gunned the ball up the line to beat Oliver Marmol to first base for the inning-ending double play.
That set the stage for the 12th inning, which Ontiveros led off with a single. Third baseman Paul Gran, who homered earlier in the game, laid down a bunt to move Ontiveros to second. Daniel Pertusati grounded out to the right side of the infield, moving Ontiveros to third. That brought Mense to the plate, looking to add to a night in which he had reached base with a double, a walk, and by being hit by a pitch. This time, Mense drove the ball through the hole on the left side, scoring Ontiveros and starting the celebration on the field.
Luckily for the Hammerheads, they'll have Sunday off to rest after this wild series, before embarking on a six-game road trip, beginning with four games against the top team in the Florida State League, the Clearwater Threshers (20-9).
