SAINT JOHN, NB --- Game Five of the 2010 President's Cup Finals was staged at Harbour Station on Saturday night, with the Moncton Wildcats taking a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven championship series on the strength of a 5-1 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs.
Devon MacAusland (2), Gabriel Bourque, Daniel Pettersson, and Kelsey Tessier all scored for Moncton in Saturday's impressive road victory, with Nathan Beaulieu tallying the lone marker of the night for Saint John.
Between the pipes, Nicola Riopel (30 saves) picked up his 15th win of the post-season for the Wildcats while Marco Cousineau (30 saves) suffered his sixth defeat of the playoffs in net for the Sea Dogs.
The visitors struck first on Saturday as red-hot sniper Gabriel Bourque buried his eighth goal of the series midway through period number one, pouncing on a loose puck deep in Saint John territory in giving his team a 1-0 advantage. Moncton went up 2-0 late in the opening frame courtesy of sophomore centre Daniel Petterson, who blasted a slot-launched one-timer to the back of the Sea Dogs' net to pick up the sixth goal of his post-season.
Colorado Avalanche prospect Kelsey Tessier put the Wildcats up by three at the 10:39 mark of the middle frame, taking a pass from Gabriel Bourque in the hosts' zone and ripping a wrist shot past Cousineau's blocker to improve his playoff goals total to a dozen. An impressive down-ice rush by Moncton then produced the visitors' fourth goal of the game a few minutes later, with Devon MacAusland finishing the play off by depositing his fifth of the post-season across the Saint John goal line.
Regulation's final frame saw the home team diligently seeking their first goal of the game, peppering Riopel with several high-quality shots throughout the stanza. Sophomore defenseman Nathan Beaulieu finally managed to get a shot past the 2008-09 QMJHL M.V.P. in the 52nd minute of play, hammering a slapper past the veteran's blocker to register his fourth goal of the post-season.
A late-match marker off the stick of Devon MacAusland restored Moncton's four-goal advantage, with the Hub City's major junior squad ultimately taking the decision by a 5-1 final.
Game Six of this series will be played on Monday night at the Moncton Coliseum (puck drop: 7pm). The Sea Dogs will be looking to stave off elimination and force a seventh game, which would be staged at Harbour Station on Tuesday evening (puck drop: 7pm).
