FSL1 Jupiter Hammerheads

Dorn Dominant In 2-1 Hammerheads Win

April 25, 2010 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

Facing the ace of the Stone Crabs' staff and one of the top prospects in baseball, the Hammerheads knew they'd need a great pitching performance from starter Johnny Dorn to have a shot at evening the series. To say that Dorn came through would be an understatement.

The righty allowed one run in seven innings, but more impressively, he kept getting better each time out. Dorn allowed three hits on the night, but all came in the first two innings. In the 2nd, consecutive singles were followed a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk to load the bases. A groundout plated the only run Charlotte (8-7) would get all night.

That's largely because Dorn completely shut down the Stone Crabs from then on. He faced the minimum 15 batters over the next 5 innings. The only runner he allowed, a 5th inning walk, was erased on a double play.

Relievers Andy Loomis and Jhan Marinez continued the dominance, each allowing just one baserunner in their respective innings. Marinez collected his first save of the season, and, in a testament to how good Charlotte's starter Matt Moore was, it was actually Loomis (2-0) who got the win.

Moore, ranked by Baseball America as the #35 prospect in baseball, put in a dominant showing of his own, allowing one run on just two hits, striking out eight Hammerheads in his five innings of work. The one run came on Daniel Pertusati's double, which scored catcher Jose Ceballos, who had led off the 3rd inning with a walk.

But if Jupiter (8-8) thought life would get easier after Moore left the game, they quickly learned otherwise. Charlotte brought in perhaps the Florida State League's most dominant reliever, Marquis Fleming, who entered the game with 17 strikeouts in just 8 innings. Fleming continued baffling batters, ringing up four more strikeouts in his two innings.

So the duel continued 1-1 into the 8th, with the Hammerheads facing Charlotte's closer Zachary Quate. After being unable to string together much offense, Jupiter suddenly started to roll. Third baseman Jake Smolinski drew a walk, followed by a Ben Lasater single. Second baseman Paul Gran stepped to the plate 0-for-3 with 2 strikeouts, but came up with a big base hit, scoring Smolinski for the game's winning run.

After tying the series by beating one of the minor league's best pitchers, Jupiter will look to take the rubber match tomorrow night at Roger Dean Stadium against... one of the minor league's best pitchers. Charlotte will send the highly touted Nick Barnese (2-1) to the hill Monday night. Jupiter's lefty Brad Hand will take the mound for the Hammerheads. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
